Stunning, grab-a-friend, insanely good wine. The structure and tannic grip manage to be both barely there and tightly controlling, giving form and space for the raspberry, blueberry and pomegrante fruits to crowd in the...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, April 2023

The brilliant 2020 Canon looks set to surpass both the 2019 and 2016 as this estate's finest wine since the post-war period, though like many of the best 2020s, it will require more patience than its 2019 counterpart...

Vinous, February 2023

The 2020 Canon is a wine of mind-blowing purity and nuance. It has been nothing less than thrilling on the three occasions I have tasted it so far. Intensely saline and chalky, the 2020 possesses spellbinding finesse and...

Decanter, January 2023

A classy, open, expressive and radiant Canon in 2020. Less plush than I was expecting on the palate, this is linear, focussed and refined with a core of juicy red fruits; raspberries, strawberries and cherries. High...

Black cherries, fresh herbs, lemon rind, and violets on the nose. Crushed stone, too. Medium to full body with super fine tannins that run the length of the wine. It goes on for minutes. A great wine. Try after 2027, but...

A stunning textural experience with its silky, velvet drenched profiled. Aromatically, you find flowers, black, red and blue fruits, licorice, and crushed rocks in the perfume. On the palate, the wine is all about its...

(97+ points) Another brilliant Saint-Emilion, the 2020 Château Canon actually reminds me of the 2019 with its pure, elegant, yet concentrated profile. Based on 68% Merlot and 32% Cabernet Franc, it reveals a deep ruby...

Wine Spectator, January 2023

Suavely rendered, this glides along with a cashmere feel, letting gently steeped black currant and black cherry fruit unfurl slowly, while hints of alder, sweet tobacco and warm earth appear in the background. A subtle...

Chateau Canon is a famous Saint-Emilion estate widely recognized as one of the best in the appellation. The property started out as part of the Clos St. Martin vineyard with only 30 acres. After purchasing it in 1760, by Monsieur Jacques Kanon expanded the estate and its vineyards but then sold it a decade later to Raymond Fontemoing, a Bordeaux wine merchant.

In 1919, the property came into the hands of the Fournier family who invested a lot of time and money, modernizing the estate and vineyards. It remained in their control until the 1990’s but by that time Chateau Canon was having some serious problems: TCA contamination, vine disease, and subsidence of the quarried cellars beneath the property.

When the Wertheimer family, which owns Chanel, acquired the estate in 1996, it was in a sorry condition and they invested in restoring the full potential of Chateau Canon for Premier Grand Cru Classe wines. A period of extensive renovation and replanting was undertaken. The 18th century residence is now entirely restored to the highest standards.

The estate’s 85 acres are planted to 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc, with the average vine age now close to 30 years. The substantial estate is on Saint-Emilion’s famous limestone plateau close to the town.

Chateau Canon has a walled vineyard at the entrance to Saint-Emilion planted to Merlot. This unique 5,000 square foot parcel is ploughed by horse and hand harvested in traditional style. Its grapes are used in crafting the estate’s Grand Vin.

A blend of 70% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc aged 18 months in French oak barrels, 70% new.

The 2020 Canon is a Bordeaux Blend from the prestigious Saint Emilion region in Bordeaux, France. This red wine showcases the expertise of the renowned producer, Canon, and is a true testament to the exceptional quality of the vintage.

In the glass, the wine displays a deep, ruby color that captures the eye. The nose is a symphony of aromas, with black cherries, fresh herbs, lemon rind, and violets taking center stage. There is also a distinct crushed stone note that adds depth and complexity to the bouquet.

On the palate, the 2020 Canon is medium to full-bodied, with super fine tannins that elegantly glide along the length of the wine. The tannins are wonderfully integrated, providing structure and support without overpowering the fruit. The wine lingers on the palate for minutes, showcasing its remarkable persistence and depth of flavor.

Notable wine critic James Suckling describes this wine as "thoroughly gorgeous" and recommends trying it after 2027, although it is already a stunning wine. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate gives it a perfect score of 100, noting its concentration, vibrant acidity, and beautifully polished tannins. Decanter also praises its elegance, refinement, and wide, expansive finish, awarding it a score of 99.

This wine offers a stunning textural experience, with a silky and velvet-drenched profile that is simply irresistible. It showcases layers of sensuous fruits, including black, red, and blue fruits, alongside floral notes, licorice, and crushed rocks. The finish is seamless, with a touch of salt that adds complexity and leaves a lasting impression.

This is a wine that will reward patience and cellaring, with a drinking window that extends from 2025 to 2060. However, for those who can't wait, it can be enjoyed now with great pleasure. The 2020 Canon is a true masterpiece, representing the essence of its superb limestone terroir and the skillful craftsmanship of its producer. It is a wine that deserves a special place in any wine lover's collection.
