Wine Enthusiast, April 2023

This wine is dense, with rich black fruits that give elegance and considerable potential. Powerful tannins are cushioned by the ripe fruits. The wine has a great future. Drink from 2026. - Roger Voss

Decanter, January 2023

Liquorice and aniseed tinged blackcurrants on the nose, very medicinal, deep, heady, perfumed too but softly scented, more savoury and spiced. Smooth and supple, fully tannic - they coat the mouth but seamlessly still...

Vibrant plum colour with violet edging, glass staining and gorgeous. A serious Pavillon Rouge, as is typical of the vintage, with fleshy raspberry and bilberry fruits, espresso and cocoa bean, precise and clean-cut...

Chateau Margaux is a famous wine estate in the Medoc region, which along with Lafite, Latour and Haut Brion, was rated a First Growth in the original 1855 Bordeaux Classification. It covers 262 hectares, of which 82 hectares are planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, and 12 hectares to Sauvignon Blanc.

In the 12th century, the property was called “La Mothe de Margaux” (the Margaux mound) and by the 16th century, wine was being produced at the estate. In 1705, the London Gazette advertised the first auction of 230 barrels of “Margose” and the 1771 vintage was the first “claret” to appear in a Christie’s catalogue. Indeed one of America’s Founding Fathers and vintner in his own right, Thomas Jefferson, visited this great estate in the late 18th century and declared it to be a vineyard of “first quality”. When Bertrand Douat, Marquis de la Colonilla, acquired the estate, he built the chateau that is often nicknamed the “Versailles of the Medoc”, a rare example of the neo-palladian style in France.

Andre Mentzelopoulos purchased the property in 1977, investing heavily in the estate and a program of improvements. Since his death in 1980, the property has been run by his daughter Corinne who continued his work in restoring the chateau to its former glory.

Introducing the exquisite 2020 Chateau Margaux Pavillon Rouge, a Bordeaux Blend that hails from the prestigious Margaux region of France. This red wine is a true testament to the artistry and craftsmanship of Chateau Margaux, one of the most revered producers in the world of fine wines.

In the glass, the 2020 Chateau Margaux Pavillon Rouge reveals a deep, vibrant red color that hints at the richness and complexity within. The nose is a symphony of aromas, with notes of ripe raspberries and dark berries intertwining with hints of cedar and delicate rose petals. It is a captivating bouquet that promises an extraordinary tasting experience.

On the palate, this wine showcases its medium to full-bodied nature with elegance and grace. It possesses excellent depth and tension, with flavors of cassis, darker cherries, and dried flowers dancing across the tongue. The integration of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot creates a harmonious blend that is both layered and concentrated.

The 2020 Chateau Margaux Pavillon Rouge is beautifully balanced, with fine tannins that are seamlessly integrated, adding structure and complexity. It exhibits a sense of energy and vibrancy, with crisp and crunchy dark fruit flavors of blackcurrant, black cherry, raspberry, and plum. As the wine lingers on the palate, notes of liquorice and clove emerge, reminding you of its potential for long-term aging.

Renowned wine critics have showered this wine with well-deserved praise. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate awards it an impressive 93+ points, highlighting its excellent depth and chalky finish. Jeb Dunnuck lauds its finesse, elegance, and purity, deeming it a gem of a second wine with Grand Vin character. James Suckling praises its attractive aromas, fine tannins, and succulent finish, suggesting that it will be even better after 2027.

The 2020 Chateau Margaux Pavillon Rouge is a wine with considerable potential and a great future. It is a wine that will reward patience and is best enjoyed from 2026 onwards. Whether you are a collector, an enthusiast, or simply someone who appreciates the finer things in life, this wine is sure to impress with its complexity, balance, and undeniable charm.
