This outstanding wine comes from a single, very steep vineyard planted solely with Grenache. The vines, all more than 100-years old are in clay and limestone soil. The vines have been carefully tended by Rene Barbier’s Clos Mogador team and the wine vinified by Rene himself.

Grapes are picked by hand and chilled for 24 hours at 4°C in the winery. Initial sorting is by hand. After de-stemming, a second, automatic selection takes place on a vibrating sorting table. The grapes undergo a 30-day fermentation in a single, large French oak vat and then mature 14 to 16 months further in the same vessel.

The wine is stunning, with glorious ripe Grenache fruit and wonderful soft spicy flavors, along with the enormous depth and richness provided by old vines.

The 2020 Espectacle Espectacle del Montsant is a red wine made from 100% Grenache grapes, sourced from the Montsant region of Spain. The wine, produced by Espectacle, is sealed with a cork and has an alcohol content of 15.0%.

James Suckling awarded this wine a score of 92 points. He noted the "nervy peppery nose with ethereal red berries, peppercorns, and spices." On the palate, Suckling described it as having a "medium body" with "wild berries and firm tannins," contributing to a "nimble yet composed mouthfeel." He also mentioned a "nice touch of bitter spices at the end," and suggested that the wine is ready to drink now. His review highlights the wine's dynamic flavor profile and structured tannins.

In contrast, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate provided a more detailed analysis, giving the 2020 Espectacle del Montsant an excellent score of 97 points. The review pointed out that the wine has a lower alcohol content compared to the two previous vintages, despite it being a warmer year. This has resulted in "power and concentration" due to the weather and low yields from mildew. The wine achieves "good concentration with freshness," which is essential for a balanced 2020 vintage. The Advocate described the wine as "floral," with a "more primary" fruit profile and "abundant, fine-grained tannins" that will benefit from additional time in the bottle. They noted that approximately 6,500 bottles of this vintage were produced, and it was bottled in May 2022.

The 2020 Espectacle Espectacle del Montsant shows a promising balance of power and freshness, with both reviewers acknowledging its complex flavor profile and structured tannins. While it is drinkable now, it may also benefit from further aging.
