jebdunnuck.com, May 2024

I think the finest vintage to date from this estate, the 2020 Château Faugères has some similarities to the 2016, but with a touch more density and depth. Incredible aromatics of cassis, ripe cherries, leather, and...

Truffles, cocoa, dark red fruits, licorice and spice create a perfume that wants to get noticed. On the palate, the wine is rich, lush, concentrated, deep and polished. Yet, it is balanced by its freshness, lift and...

The Wine Independent, March 2023

The 2020 Faugeres from Saint Emilion has a deep garnet-purple color. It requires some patient swirling to unlock scents of tar, forest floor, wet slate, and garrigue, before opening out to a fragrant core of baked plums...

(WA 91-93 points) Deep purple-black colored, the 2020 Faugères stampedes out of the glass with a herd of powerful black fruit notes: blackberry pie, baked black plums and ripe, juicy black cherries, plus hints of wild...

Decanter, May 2026

Red cherry, black cherry and vanilla on the nose. Smooth and glossy, full of boysenberry and toast, with fresh acidity, chewy tannin and a lingering finish.

An austere structure for this wine, showing small ripe black fruits and undergrowth, plenty of oak, grippy tannins at the finish. It's closed right now; it needs time. - SUZANNE MUSTACICH

Château Faugères 2020 is a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé that leans into richness and polish while keeping a clear line of freshness. The blend is reported as 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, drawn from low-yielding vines (23 hl/ha), a factor that helps explain the wine’s concentration. Élevage is in French oak, with about half new barrels over roughly 14 months.

Several critics were notably enthusiastic. James Suckling rated it an excellent 95 points, calling it “a ripe, rich red” with “loads of crushed-berry, chocolate and walnut character” and “layered texture.” Jeb Dunnuck also landed at 95, describing “mulled cherries, blueberries, iron, and bouquet garni,” and praising its “purity and elegance,” adding that it’s “certainly a beautiful wine in the making” with “two decades of longevity.”

Jeff Leve (The Wine Cellar Insider) awarded 94 points and emphasized the estate’s modern, glossy style: “rich, lush, concentrated, deep and polished,” but “balanced by its freshness, lift and elegance,” finishing with “vibrant, cocoa, plum and spice-box” notes. He suggests a wide drinking window, “2024–2040.”

Lisa Perrotti-Brown (Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate) scored it 93 and delivers the most detailed aromatic picture, noting it “stampedes out of the glass” with “blackberry pie, baked black plums and ripe, juicy black cherries,” plus savory complexity—“wild mushrooms, damp soil, tar and star anise”—and “a long and earthy” finish.

Decanter (91) highlights the impact of the small crop and élevage, citing “intense charred oak on the nose,” though it’s “balanced…with ripe berry fruit alongside liquorice and black chocolate,” and calls it “sleek and confident with clear depth.” Overall, 2020 Faugères reads as a concentrated, oak-framed Saint-Émilion that’s built to age, with standout critical support at the 94–95 level.
