jamessuckling.com, August 2024

This is a really enticing wine with an open and vivid nature that tells you right away it is Barolo, but it’s polished and sweetly tannic. You want to taste and taste. It’s medium- to full-bodied with rounded tannins and...

The 2020 Barolo Conteisa is fabulous. Once again, Conteisa makes a very strong case for itself as the most improved wine at Gaja. Sensual, silky tannins and lifted aromatics capture the pinnacle of finesse. Medium in...

Gaja’s Conteisa 2020 is a Barolo DOCG made entirely from Nebbiolo grown in Cerequio, the celebrated MGA in La Morra. Since the 2013 vintage, Conteisa has been 100% Nebbiolo; before that, the estate historically included a small portion of Barbera (about 8%), which is one reason the wine was once labeled outside Barolo. Cerequio sits around 350–400 meters, with calcareous marl soils (Tortonian age), a site often associated with Barolo that leans toward fragrance and finesse.

The 2020 growing season in Piedmont produced “balanced, mid-weight” Barolos with “grace, translucence, and early appeal,” according to vintage commentary (Timeless Wines). The Gaja family also reported yields about 15% lower than usual, with wines showing structure, concentration, and “elegant, sweet tannins” (Franca About Wine).

In the glass, Conteisa 2020 is positioned as a more aromatic, floral counterpoint to Gaja’s Sperss from Serralunga (Best of Wines). Giovanni Gaja describes a “classic Nebbiolo profile” built on “wild cherry, crushed mint, dusty limestone, and pressed violets” (Wine.com). The wine’s technical notes echo that register, citing “pressed roses,” “blue violets,” bright cherry fruit, mint, and darker accents such as liquorice, tar, ginger, and “delicately smoked cedar” (producer technical notes as reported by Superiore.de). The same sheet lists 14.00% alcohol, 1.26 g/L residual sugar, total acidity of 5.95 g/L, and pH 3.42.

Critical reception is notably strong. The scores reported on the technical sheet include an excellent 98 points from James Suckling and 97 points from The Wine Advocate (Superiore.de), alongside 95 from Wine Enthusiast and 93 from Falstaff. Wine Spectator’s note describes a “spicy, cherry-scented red” with a “lacy texture,” though the numeric score is not publicly visible due to the paywall.
