Château Grand-Puy-Ducasse 2020 is a Cinquième Cru Classé from Pauillac, produced from a Cabernet Sauvignon–Merlot blend and positioned by critics as one of the estate’s strongest modern releases. The property, owned by CA Grands Crus since 2004, is known for a patchwork of parcels across Pauillac and neighboring communes, and in 2020 it delivered a wine that reviewers consistently describe as concentrated, structured, and built to age.

Several reviews rise to the top. James Suckling awarded an excellent 96 points, calling it “a transparent and clear young Pauillac” with “blackcurrant, mushroom, chocolate, and wet earth,” finishing with “fine, velvety tannins” and “plenty of graphite,” recommending it “drink after 2027.” Jeb Dunnuck (95) likewise frames it as “brilliant, powerful, age-worthy,” citing “blackcurrants, tobacco, cedar pencil, and chocolate,” plus “a dense, mouth-filling texture… and outstanding length,” while noting it is “not the most elegant Pauillac out there” but “beautifully done” and “incredibly satisfying,” with “30-40 years of overall longevity.”

Wine Spectator (94) emphasizes flow and early appeal, saying it “flows wonderfully from the start” with cassis and dark blackberry, plus “tobacco leaf and graphite accents,” calling it “a pretty gorgeous Pauillac,” best from 2025–2038. Vinous’ Antonio Galloni (94) leans into refinement: “elegant, polished and sophisticated,” with dark cherry, mocha, licorice and “terrific energy.” Jeff Leve (94) calls it “one of the best vintages of Grand Puy Ducasse ever produced,” highlighting “volume, balance, freshness, length,” and a finish that “will age for 2-3 decades” (2025–2050).

Expect ripe black-fruit depth, classic Pauillac tobacco-and-graphite tones, and firm, supportive tannins. While power is a recurring theme—Decanter (93) describes it as “clearly powerful and concentrated”—the consensus is that 2020 balances its heft with definition and aging potential.
