Vinous, August 2023

The 2020 Galatrona is stunning. In fact, the 2020 is one of the best vintages of the Galatrona I can remember tasting. I am especially impressed by its vertical intensity and explosive energy. All the elements are so...

jamessuckling.com, July 2022

Subtle yet intense aromas of black fruit and violets. Extremely perfumed. Crushed stones. Medium-bodied with ultra-fine tannins that give a mouth-feel of velvet that goes on for minutes. Refined and fresh. Al-dente fruit...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, June 2022

The Petrolo 2020 Galatrona is a pure expression of organic Merlot and the estate's headline wine. It was first created in 1994 when Luca Sanjust's second child, Lucia, was born. Despite the summer heat that became a...

Wine Enthusiast, January 2023

Dark berries, chocolate mousse, dried herbs and a bit of chili pepper heat show on the nose of this wine. The palate remains chocolatey but herbal, with a dark-cherry-syrup finish contrasted by chalky, gritty tannins and...

Decanter, May 2022

Some forest floor notes mingled with dark fruits and fresh herbs - liquorice and blackcurrant with hints of dark chocolate and thyme. Supple and mouthfilling, this has weight from the get go, the tannins massy, plush and...

Wine Spectator, May 2023

A round, fruity red, with ripe black cherry, blackberry, plum, graphite and spice flavors. Starts out smooth, firming up on the finish, where refined tannins kick in. Shows fine balance, but give this a few years to...

Galatrona is Petrolo's flagship and one of the most awarded wines of the estate. It is a wine of great structure on the palate, and wildly aromatic on the nose. First produced in 1994, this 100% Merlot comes from estate vines planted in the early 90’s. The vineyard extends over 3 hectares, and is the first vineyard of Merlot that Petrolo planted. The yield per vine is limited, allowing for the concentration of components fundamental to achieve the structure, elegance, balance and persistence wanted for this wine.

Macerated on the skins for 2 weeks or more, the pump-overs are done often and with considerable care to allow for complete and gentle extraction. Malolactic fermentation takes place in barriques, and the wine is then aged in new French barriques for approximately 18 months. During this period the wine is left for the first 6 months on the fine lees, which allows the finished product to achieve greater complexity.

The 2020 Petrolo Galatrona IGT is a Merlot from Tuscany, Italy, showcasing the region's potential for producing high-quality wines. Petrolo, the producer, has crafted this vintage with meticulous attention, utilizing organically grown grapes.

James Suckling awards it an impressive score of 97, highlighting its "subtle yet intense aromas of black fruit and violets" and the "ultra-fine tannins" that create a "mouth-feel of velvet." He suggests that its quality will only improve with a few more years of aging.

Vinous's Antonio Galloni lauds the wine with an even higher score of 98, calling it "stunning" and praising its "vertical intensity and explosive energy." He notes the harmonious integration of dark-toned fruit, crushed rocks, menthol, and spice, culminating in an intense finish.

Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate offers a score of 96, emphasizing the 2020 Galatrona's ability to overcome the summer heat challenges in Tuscany. The review describes the wine as having a "subtle bouquet" that evolves in the glass. Aromas of cherry and toasted almond contribute to a "long and very elegant finish," supported by soft oak tannins.

Decanter and Wine Spectator both score the wine at 93. Decanter appreciates the wine's "power" and "finesse," with its detailed notes of "liquorice and blackcurrant" and a balanced finish. Wine Spectator describes it as "round" and "fruity," with refined tannins that suggest it will benefit from further aging.

Wine Enthusiast awards a score of 95, noting the presence of "dark berries, chocolate mousse, dried herbs," and a finish of "dark-cherry-syrup" contrasted by "chalky, gritty tannins."

Overall, the 2020 Petrolo Galatrona IGT is a robust and complex Merlot, receiving high praise across the board for its balance, intensity, and potential for aging.
