Vinous, August 2023

The 2020 Galatrona is stunning. In fact, the 2020 is one of the best vintages of the Galatrona I can remember tasting. I am especially impressed by its vertical intensity and explosive energy. All the elements are so...

jamessuckling.com, July 2022

Subtle yet intense aromas of black fruit and violets. Extremely perfumed. Crushed stones. Medium-bodied with ultra-fine tannins that give a mouth-feel of velvet that goes on for minutes. Refined and fresh. Al-dente fruit...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, June 2022

The Petrolo 2020 Galatrona is a pure expression of organic Merlot and the estate's headline wine. It was first created in 1994 when Luca Sanjust's second child, Lucia, was born. Despite the summer heat that became a...

Wine Enthusiast, January 2023

Dark berries, chocolate mousse, dried herbs and a bit of chili pepper heat show on the nose of this wine. The palate remains chocolatey but herbal, with a dark-cherry-syrup finish contrasted by chalky, gritty tannins and...

Decanter, May 2022

Some forest floor notes mingled with dark fruits and fresh herbs - liquorice and blackcurrant with hints of dark chocolate and thyme. Supple and mouthfilling, this has weight from the get go, the tannins massy, plush and...

Wine Spectator, May 2023

A round, fruity red, with ripe black cherry, blackberry, plum, graphite and spice flavors. Starts out smooth, firming up on the finish, where refined tannins kick in. Shows fine balance, but give this a few years to...

Galatrona is Petrolo's flagship and one of the most awarded wines of the estate. It is a wine of great structure on the palate, and wildly aromatic on the nose. First produced in 1994, this 100% Merlot comes from estate vines planted in the early 90’s. The vineyard extends over 3 hectares, and is the first vineyard of Merlot that Petrolo planted. The yield per vine is limited, allowing for the concentration of components fundamental to achieve the structure, elegance, balance and persistence wanted for this wine.

Macerated on the skins for 2 weeks or more, the pump-overs are done often and with considerable care to allow for complete and gentle extraction. Malolactic fermentation takes place in barriques, and the wine is then aged in new French barriques for approximately 18 months. During this period the wine is left for the first 6 months on the fine lees, which allows the finished product to achieve greater complexity.

The 2020 Petrolo Galatrona IGT, a Merlot from Tuscany, Italy, stands out as an exemplary wine that has garnered significant praise from various wine critics. This vintage showcases a rich complexity and balance that highlights its Italian heritage and the meticulous care put into its production.

Decanter awarded this wine a score of 93, noting its "forest floor notes mingled with dark fruits and fresh herbs" such as "liquorice and blackcurrant with hints of dark chocolate and thyme." The review highlighted its "massy, plush and fleshy" tannins and emphasized its "detailed and precise" nature, concluding that it is a "hefty wine, with real might but still some finesse."

James Suckling rated the 2020 Galatrona an impressive 97 points, praising its "subtle yet intense aromas of black fruit and violets" and remarking on its "ultra-fine tannins that give a mouth-feel of velvet." He recommended waiting three to four years before enjoying this wine, noting its potential for further improvement.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate gave this vintage 96 points, describing it as a "pure expression of organic Merlot." The review mentioned the wine's resilience despite the challenging summer heat in Tuscany and praised its "cherry, toasted almond and dried mint" aromas, alongside a "long and very elegant finish." It also highlighted the "soft and sweet" oak tannins, which contribute to the wine's lasting flavors.

Wine Spectator matched Decanter's score of 93, describing the wine as "round, fruity" with flavors of "ripe black cherry, blackberry, plum, graphite, and spice." The review suggested that the wine would benefit from a few years of aging to fully integrate its elements.

Wine Enthusiast awarded the wine 95 points, emphasizing its "dark berries, chocolate mousse, dried herbs, and a bit of chili pepper heat." Reviewer Danielle Callegari called it an "absolute indulgence in the best way," noting its "chalky, gritty tannins and lingering heat."

Vinous provided the highest score, a near-perfect 98, with Antonio Galloni calling the 2020 Galatrona "stunning" and "one of the best vintages" he has tasted. Galloni praised its "vertical intensity and explosive energy," noting the impeccable integration of "dark-toned fruit, crushed rocks, menthol, licorice, and spice."

Overall, the 2020 Petrolo Galatrona IGT is highly regarded by critics for its complexity, balance, and potential for aging. It stands out as a powerful yet refined expression of Tuscan Merlot.
