Galatrona is Petrolo's flagship and one of the most awarded wines of the estate. It is a wine of great structure on the palate, and wildly aromatic on the nose. First produced in 1994, this 100% Merlot comes from estate vines planted in the early 90’s. The vineyard extends over 3 hectares, and is the first vineyard of Merlot that Petrolo planted. The yield per vine is limited, allowing for the concentration of components fundamental to achieve the structure, elegance, balance and persistence wanted for this wine.

Macerated on the skins for 2 weeks or more, the pump-overs are done often and with considerable care to allow for complete and gentle extraction. Malolactic fermentation takes place in barriques, and the wine is then aged in new French barriques for approximately 18 months. During this period the wine is left for the first 6 months on the fine lees, which allows the finished product to achieve greater complexity.

Petrolo’s Galatrona 2020 is the estate’s flagship single-vineyard Merlot from Val d’Arno di Sopra in Tuscany, typically labeled Toscana IGT. Farmed organically, it comes from the roughly 10-hectare Vigna Galatrona, a clay-rich, higher-elevation site that the winery and critics credit for giving concentration without losing freshness. In the cellar, fermentation is with indigenous yeasts in concrete, followed by roughly 18–20 months in French oak barriques (about a quarter to a third new, depending on the account), a regimen that aims for polish rather than overt sweetness.

Across reviewers, the 2020 reads as a dark-fruited, structured Merlot with notable lift. Decanter (93) points to “forest floor… dark fruits and fresh herbs,” calling it “supple and mouthfilling” with “massy, plush and fleshy” tannins, while also noting “high acidity giving the lifeforce to balance the concentration.” Wine Spectator (93) finds it “round” and ripe—“black cherry, blackberry, plum, graphite and spice”—and recommends patience as it “starts out smooth, firming up on the finish.”

Several critics rate it at an exceptional level. Vinous’ Antonio Galloni awards an excellent 98, writing, “The 2020 Galatrona is stunning… one of the best vintages… I can remember tasting,” highlighting “vertical intensity and explosive energy” and an “impeccably woven” whole. James Suckling’s 97 similarly emphasizes perfume and refinement—“black fruit and violets… crushed stones”—with “ultra-fine tannins” and a “velvet” mouthfeel, adding that it’s “better in three to four years.”

Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate (Monica Larner, 96) calls it “a pure expression of organic Merlot,” noting that “despite the summer heat… Galatrona shows terrific results,” with cherry, toasted almond, and dried mint leading to “a long and very elegant finish.” Wine Enthusiast (95) sums up its richer side: “Dark berries, chocolate mousse, dried herbs,” and “an absolute indulgence in the best way.” Drinking windows from critics suggest cellaring, with Wine Spectator’s “Best from 2025 through 2038” a useful guide.
