Roagna’s Barbaresco Pajè 2020 is a traditionally made Nebbiolo from the Pajé cru in Barbaresco DOCG, drawn from a limestone-rich amphitheater of calcareous marl with high active limestone. The estate is led by Luca Roagna, and the Pajè bottling is built around extended, old-school élevage: fermentation in large wood with indigenous yeasts, a long submerged-cap maceration (reported at roughly two months), and extended aging in large neutral oak before release. It’s a method intended to put structure ahead of early approachability.

Professional reviews are consistently strong, with several excellent scores. James Suckling awards 97 points, calling it “an elegant and stylish wine with fresh violets, roses, wild strawberries,” alongside “earthy minerals…Sichuan pepper and licorice,” and noting a “dusty texture” and “austere finish,” advising it is “drinkable now, but best from 2027.” Kerin O’Keefe also gives 97 points, describing “flower shop aromas of red rose, lavender and violet” layered with “forest floor, new leather and eucalyptus,” and an “elegant palate” where “star anise, truffle and blood orange” lift a red-cherry core, finishing on a “tangy mineral finish” with “taut, fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity.”

Antonio Galloni (Vinous) rates it 95 and emphasizes a more restrained, built-to-age profile: “deeply pitched spice and menthol notes” over “vibrant red Nebbiolo fruit,” with “firm, sinewy tannins,” calling it “a fabulous young Barbaresco…that just needs time to emerge.”

Wine Spectator likewise scores 95, highlighting aromatic detail—“rose petal…earth and savory underbrush”—and a classic Barbaresco balance where “bracing acidity and sinewy tannins lend support,” concluding it is “long and elegant.” Wine Spectator reports 474 cases made and 80 cases imported, with a window of 2028–2045, underscoring the wine’s clear emphasis on cellar life.
