Tua Rita’s Redigaffi 2020 is a 100% Merlot from coastal Tuscany (Toscana IGT), a long-established “Super Tuscan” benchmark for the variety. The estate’s Merlot vines were planted in 1988, and the wine is raised about 18–20 months in 100% new French oak barriques, a regimen that helps explain both the wine’s polish and its overtly spiced, mocha-toned profile.
The best reviews are emphatic. James Suckling (96 points) calls it “structured and deep with polished oak-spice character,” noting it is “tight for now,” yet “very fine and elegant,” with “finesse for Redigaffi,” and suggests, “Try in 2026.” Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate also awarded 96 points, with Monica Larner reporting that the “bouquet sings with dark fruit, dried apricot, spice, leather and campfire ash,” while the palate shows “extra richness and concentration” but remains “soft and accessible with rich layering and texture.” Wine Enthusiast likewise scored 96; Danielle Callegari describes a nose that starts with “berries dipped in vanilla and chocolate,” then moves into “a riot of wild herbs,” with tannins that are “so fine-grained and smooth they’re almost ethereal,” concluding, “It’s magical now,” and projecting improvement with time (drink 2024–2038).
Other major critics land just a step behind. Wine Spectator (95 points) highlights a “luscious, silky red” built on black cherry and blackberry, with “chocolate, coffee, vanilla and mineral,” adding, “Despite its richness, this has finesse and detail, too,” and recommends drinking 2025–2042. Decanter (95 points) points to “white pepper, barrel spice, vanilla and dusty black fruit,” and notes that the wine “pulls of the higher alcohol without a hint of notice,” also referencing lower yields in Tuscany in 2020.
Vinous (94 points) is the most cautious, citing “a bit of angularity in the tannins,” though Antonio Galloni still finds “good energy and plenty of stylishness.” Overall, Redigaffi 2020 reads as a dense, oak-framed Merlot with notable finesse, built for both near-term pleasure and long aging.
