This is a concentrated, modern-leaning Saint‑Émilion that still aims for freshness. James Suckling delivers one of the standout reviews at 99 points, calling it “very opulent and expressive… Full-bodied with plush, velvety tannins,” adding that “it goes on for minutes… remains fresh and vivid… One of the great Valandrauds.” Jeb Dunnuck’s 99-point note is similarly emphatic, calling it “one of the wines of the vintage,” highlighting crème de cassis, violets, “new leather,” and an “almost Hermitage-like burning embers character,” with “ripe, seamless tannins” and “a finish that won’t quit.”
Other critics underline the same dark-fruited richness, often with a bright spine. Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate (95–97 points) describes it “burst[ing] with scents of crushed black plums… blackberry preserves,” with “energetic, crunchy black fruits” and “beautifully ripe, rounded tannins.” Decanter (96 points) finds it “juicy and alive,” layering “acidity, mint, freshness and toast,” and praises its “salty minerality.” Jane Anson (96 points) calls it “exuberant without being overdone.”
Stylistically, it can read as showy: Wine Spectator (93) says it “tilts to the showy side,” with fig preserves, licorice, and espresso-tinged warmth. Even so, the consensus points to serious cellaring potential, with best drinking generally projected from around 2027 onward, and Dunnuck suggesting 20–25 years of development after a short wait.
