Bright and fruity with black currant, blackberry, boysenberry and black licorice notes, but not overdone. Full-bodied with tension from tannins that nicely frame the wine. Firm, bright and focused, even racy. Drinking so...

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford Reserve, which functions as the second wine to the Georges de Latour Private Reserve, is classic Rutherford with its black (and some blue) fruits supported by graphite, chocolate...

Beaulieu Vineyard’s 2021 Rutherford Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is a firmly built, classically styled Napa Valley red drawn entirely from estate vineyards on the western Rutherford Bench. The blend is 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Petit Verdot, and 2% Malbec, and it spent 22 months in French oak, 80% of it new, finishing at 14.8% alcohol.

The strongest critical notes agree on dark fruit, Rutherford earth, and a structured, age-worthy frame. James Suckling gives an excellent 95 points, calling it “bright and fruity with black currant, blackberry, boysenberry and black licorice… Full-bodied with tension from tannins… Firm, bright and focused… [and] will age beautifully.” Decanter also awards an excellent 95, describing a “powerful, muscular” wine with violet, blackberry and cassis, plus cedarwood and espresso, concluding it is “delicious now and capable of long-term cellaring.”

Several 94-point reviews reinforce that high standing. Wine Spectator calls it “a vibrant version” with “pure cassis and plum fruit” over a “loamy note,” and recommends patience: “Best from 2025 through 2040.” Antonio Galloni (Vinous) notes mocha, dried herbs, gravel, incense and pipe tobacco, adding that the wine is “medium in body and quite reserved” and “needs a few years to unwind.” He also frames 2021 as a turning point: “a big step up,” and “essentially the second wine to the Georges de Latour.”

Jeb Dunnuck (94) echoes that positioning and the Rutherford signature—black and blue fruit with “graphite, chocolate, and gravelly earth”—and reports “just over 5,000 cases produced,” estimating “15 years or more of prime drinking.” Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate (92+) calls it “the best bang for the buck in the BV lineup,” highlighting black cherry and plum with menthol and “silky but firm tannins.” Overall, it’s a polished, benchmark-leaning Rutherford Cabernet with real cellar potential.
