Cardinale’s 2021 Napa Valley red blend continues the house approach: a single, flagship Cabernet-led wine built from multiple Napa sources rather than a single estate. The blend is 91% Cabernet Sauvignon and 9% Merlot, with the Cabernet drawn from sites including Stags Leap, Rutherford, and St. Helena, and the Merlot from the Keyes Estate Vineyard on Howell Mountain, according to Decanter. It was aged 22 months in 80% new French oak (also noted by Jeb Dunnuck), and production is reported at 3,500 cases by James Suckling and Wine Spectator.
The critical reception is excellent, led by a standout 100-point review from Jeb Dunnuck, who calls it “the perfect 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon,” citing “off-the-charts richness and depth” alongside cassis, graphite, tobacco, and espresso, with “perfectly integrated oak.” Two 99-point scores reinforce that top-tier showing: James Suckling highlights “lovely purple fruits with violets, lead pencil, mint, crushed stones,” and “ultra-fine tannins” with a “silky” texture, while The Wine Independent describes a deep garnet-purple wine that “comes bounding out of the glass” with warm cassis, blueberries, and Bing cherry, finishing “long with a fragrant lift.”
At the more classically framed end of the spectrum, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate (97 points) finds black cherry, cassis, graphite, and crushed stone, noting the palate turns from “rich, generous, concentrated and expansive” to “more classically structured and dusty” on the finish. Decanter (98 points) emphasizes savory detail—black cherry, cedar, black liquorice, black tea, tobacco leaf—plus a “soaring tannin profile” and unusually “crisp and mouthwatering acidity” for such a dense wine.
Wine Spectator (95 points) flags the oak more directly, describing a “frankly toasty frame,” but also notes length, “a lovely mouthfeel,” and recommends cellaring (best 2026–2038). Overall, 2021 reads as a concentrated, Napa-wide blend where ripe fruit, graphite-leaning structure, and prominent but generally well-handled new oak are central to the style.
