The Wine Palate, June 2026

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is made from 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Petit Verdot, and 5% Malbec. It gallops out with a powerful intensity of juicy blueberries, blackcurrant jelly, and...

A fabulous young wine with a long career ahead. Showing the angular nature of youth, a little bony in terms of tannins, but so concentrated, firm, juicy and full. Beautiful dark cherries, blueberries and dark chocolate...

(97+ points) The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon is showing very well for a wine that was bottled just a few months ago. Sweet floral and spice notes open first, conferring notable freshness and vibrancy. Medium in body and...

Cornell Vineyards’ 2021 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon is an estate-grown, Bordeaux-style blend from Sonoma County’s high-elevation Fountaingrove District AVA. The winery reports the blend as 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Malbec, and 3% Petit Verdot, aged 18 months in 45% new French oak and bottled at 14.5% alcohol. Fruit was picked September 8–17, 2021, then bottled May 25, 2023 and released August 13, 2024.

The estate’s own notes point to a classically dark, lifted profile—cocoa, candied orange, and violets on the nose, with blueberry, crème de cassis, wild blackberry, fennel seed, verbena, and coffee bean flavors—carried by “long, voluminous tannins.” In other words, it’s built with structure and patience in mind, but with aromatic detail rather than just heft.

Critical response is outstanding. Antonio Galloni rated it 97+ points in Vinous, calling it “regal” and noting how “sweet floral and spice notes open first, conferring notable freshness and vibrancy.” He emphasizes its restraint and shape: “medium in body and beautifully persistent,” and says it “impresses with its finesse more than anything else,” with “hints of red/purplish fruit, rose petal, lavender and spice” emerging with air. Galloni also flags a key practical point: Cornell Cabernet “usually needs a few years to blossom post bottling,” and he expects the same here.

James Suckling’s 98-point review is another excellent mark, describing “a fabulous young wine with a long career ahead,” with “beautiful dark cherries, blueberries and dark chocolate” plus “oak spices, cedar and cinnamon,” and recommending it “Best from 2030.”

The most exuberant praise comes from The Wine Palate, awarding 99 points and describing a “full-bodied palate” that is “simply electric,” finishing “very long with a floral and mineral firework display.” Taken together, the reviews frame a youthful but serious Cabernet: concentrated, aromatic, and firmly structured, with clear upside for cellaring.
