Domaine Blain-Gagnard’s Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru “Morgeot” 2021 is a Chardonnay-based white Burgundy built around the fuller, clay-influenced side of Chassagne. The family estate, founded in 1980 and based in Chassagne-Montrachet, works traditionally and farms sustainably using *lutte raisonnée*, with hand work in the vineyards. In 2021, this cuvée is sourced exclusively from the Les Boirettes parcel within Morgeot (fruit that previously contributed from Champ Jendreau is no longer included). The wine sits at a moderate 13% alcohol, and it is typically raised about 11 months in French oak with roughly 30% new barrels, a regimen that tends to underline Morgeot’s natural breadth with gentle toast and spice.

The 2021 growing season was defined by severe April frost across Burgundy, and this bottling was made in very small quantities after major crop losses were reported at the domaine. The concentration that results from low yields shows up here more as intensity of flavor and line than as outright weight, in keeping with the cooler, more “classic” style often associated with the vintage.

Critically, the wine earned an excellent review from Burghound (Allen Meadows), scoring it 91 points and rating it “Outstanding.” Meadows highlights a refined aromatic profile, calling it “fresh, bright and pretty” with notes of “citrus confit, petrol and just sliced pear.” On the palate, he emphasizes its approachability and texture, describing “round, generous and seductively textured middleweight flavors,” and he notes “solid depth and persistence on the balanced finish.”

While Meadows observes it is “not as concentrated or powerful” as some examples, the overall picture is of a clearly Premier Cru Morgeot: ample, creamy in feel, and driven by balanced structure rather than sheer mass—an especially appealing match for early drinking, yet with enough depth to reward short- to mid-term cellaring.
