Epoch Estate Wines’ 2021 York Mountain Syrah is a small-production, estate-grown bottling from the York Mountain AVA in Paso Robles’ coastal-influenced hills. Made by winemaker Jordan Fiorentini, it’s built around Syrah (96%) with a traditional Rhône-style co-ferment of 2% Roussanne and 2% Viognier. The winery reports fermentation in concrete and oak tanks, then 18 months in French oak with 20% new barrels. Alcohol is listed at 15%, and production is limited to 474 cases, with multiple reviewers noting a fall 2024 release window.
The critical consensus is emphatically positive, with several excellent reviews. Jeb Dunnuck’s 99-point rating is the headline: he calls it “a juicy, medium to full-bodied…ripe, yet still somehow cool climate-like” Syrah marked by “peppery herbs, iron, black olive, and violet-driven aromas and flavors,” adding, “This magical Syrah flirts with perfection,” and projecting it to “see its 20th birthday in fine form.” Vinous (Eric Guido) is similarly enthusiastic at 97+ points, describing a “dreamy” profile of “sweet herbs and olives with wet stones and blackberries,” finishing with “staining length and concentration yet somehow remains remarkably fresh.”
A cooler-climate imprint comes through repeatedly. Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate (95 points) notes “wafts of olives, white pepper and sage” that “show off the cooler vintage,” framing “powdery tannins” and “vibrant acidity” in a style “reminiscent of Côte-Rôtie.” Wine Enthusiast’s 97-point “Cellar Selection” underscores that York Mountain “magic,” moving from “blackberry, elderflower and violet” into a “tense palate” featuring “charred gam and cracked peppercorns,” with a drinking window of now–2042.
Decanter (93 points) keeps it grounded, calling it “textbook Syrah” with “concentrated black fruits and cracked black pepper” and praising the “restrained use of new oak” for keeping it “pure and in balance.” Wine Spectator (96 points) sums up the overall shape well: “A bold version, yet with elegance and poise,” finishing “long” and “refined” around ripe tannins.
