VN 95

Vinous, May 2022

(VN 93-95 points) The 2021 Haut-Batailley is a few steps up from the second wine. Dark and ample in feel, with broad shoulders, the Grand Vin possesses notable depth and intensity right out of the gate. Black cherry...

jamessuckling.com, May 2022

(JS 93-94 points) A firm and refined red with crushed-stone and salty, mineral character, as well as creamy tannins. Some iodine, too. Medium body. Medium finish. 70% cabernet sauvignon and 30% merlot.

jebdunnuck.com, June 2022

(JD 92-94 points) The 2021 Château Haut-Batailley shines, and this estate, under the helm of the team from Lynch-Bages, is one to watch. Classic Cabernet notes of cassis, violets, and graphite give way to a medium to...

Decanter, April 2022

Open and violet-scented bramble fruits, some smoked cherries and milk chocolate. Smooth and supple, this has generosity of fruit, acidity and velvety tannins. Round and just so delicious, really very moreish, all in...

TheWineCellarInsider.com, May 2022

(JL 91-93 points) Deep ruby in color, the wine shows its cedar, tobacco leaf, mocha, and black currants easily. Fresh and spicy, medium-bodied and energetic, give this just a year or two and it is going to be fun to...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, April 2022

(WA 90-93 points) The 2021 Haut-Batailley is a charming, medium to full-bodied, fleshy wine evocative of cassis, sweet berries, pipe tobacco and pencil shavings. Supple and succulent, with an ample core of fruit and...

janeanson.com, April 2022

This is setting out a serious stall, with depth through the palate and a sense of lively momentum. Cabernet dominant, with savoury fruits that are just a little short on the finish, rose stems, raspberry leaf, whispers of...

Chateau Haut-Batailley is a Left Bank Bordeaux wine property that was originally part of Chateau Batailley, a Fifth Growth in the 1855 Classification. Jointly owned by Francis and Marcel Borie, they divided the estate between them in 1942.

Marcel took the Batailley half, including the chateau. The smaller part went to Francis who purchased additional vineyard land from Chateau Duhart-Milon to increase the size of his Haut Batailley vineyards. Now managed by Francois-Xavier Borie, Chateau Haut-Batailley is part of the Borie family of estates that includes Chateau Ducru-Beaucaillou and Chateau Grand-Puy-Lacoste.

The 22 hectares of Chateau Haut-Batailley are on a gently sloping outcrop at the southern edge of Pauillac. They are planted with 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc on exceptional soils of deep gravel and alluvial stones. This ensures excellent drainage of rainwater and encourages deep roots. The average age of the vines is 35 years old.

In 2005, Francois-Xavier Borie began a major program of construction, building a modern vat house, new harvest facilities and a bottling room, all in harmony with the pre-existing decor.

Chateau Haut-Batailley is a Bordeaux blend dominated by a high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes are hand-harvested and carefully sorted both before and after de-stemming.

Prior to fermentation, the grapes undergo a long, cool maceration of three weeks. When fermentation is complete, the wines age from 16 to 18 month in French oak barrels, 60% of which are new.

The 2021 Haut Batailley is a Bordeaux Blend that hails from the prestigious Pauillac region of Bordeaux, France. This red wine showcases the elegance and complexity that is synonymous with the region, making it a true gem for wine enthusiasts.

In the glass, the Haut Batailley displays a deep ruby color that immediately captivates the eye. The aromas that waft from the glass are equally enchanting, with notes of cassis, sweet berries, pipe tobacco, and pencil shavings. These aromatics create a layered and inviting bouquet that entices you to take your first sip.

On the palate, this wine is medium to full-bodied, offering a supple and succulent mouthfeel. The ample core of fruit, including flavors of black currants and raspberry, is beautifully balanced by ripe, powdery tannins. The wine's fleshy texture and lively momentum create a harmonious and enjoyable drinking experience.

Notable wine critics have praised the 2021 Haut Batailley, further solidifying its exceptional quality. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate awarded it 93 points, describing it as charming and evocative. Jane Anson also scored it 91 points, highlighting its depth and lively character. Jeff Leve bestowed 93 points upon this wine, noting its freshness and spicy nature. Jeb Dunnuck and James Suckling both rated it 94 points, praising its classic Cabernet notes and refined structure. Vinous awarded the wine an impressive 95 points, commending its power and depth.

Overall, the 2021 Haut Batailley is a superb Bordeaux red wine that showcases the best of Pauillac. With its complex aromas, elegant flavors, and rave reviews, this wine is sure to impress even the most discerning wine connoisseurs. Whether enjoyed now or cellared for future enjoyment, the Haut Batailley is a true testament to the artistry of winemaking in Bordeaux.
