(JS 97-98 points) Polished and refined with a firm, fine and linear tannin structure. Harmonious. Perfumed violets, roses and subtle licorice. All in balance here, with precise layers of black fruit, minerals and pencil...

(JL 96-98 points) Flowers, blackberries, charcoal, cigar box, black currants, spice, cedar, graphite and tobacco come through on the nose with a bit of coaxing. On the palate, the wine offers a pure expression of red...

Wine Enthusiast, June 2022

(WE 96–98 points) This is essentially Cabernet Sauvignon, giving beautiful black currant notes that come through in succulent juiciness and a serious core of tannins that are giving the wine a solid backbone. This will...

Decanter, April 2022

Surely a contender for wine of the vintage, certainly on the Left Bank. Vibrant and explosive, what a wine in 2021. Graphite, black chocolate, black pepper and blackcurrant aromas but also with floral edges - so intense!...

Vinous, February 2024

The 2021 Lafite-Rothschild is every bit as exceptional as it was from barrel. The high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon comes through loud and clear. All the elements are so well balanced. The 2021 is dark, racy and full...

janeanson.com, January 2024

One of the wines of the vintage, as it was En Primeur, and delivers grip and character, laced with slate, graceful cool blue and black fruit. Finessed tannins opens to show waves of sage, liqourice root, cloves and forest...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, February 2024

(96+ points) To my palate, the 2021 Lafite Rothschild has emerged as the finest of the Pauillac first growths this year. Wafting from the glass with aromas of dark minty berries mingled with notions of iris, licorice and...

Chateau Lafite, the famous Pauillac property of the Left Bank of the Medoc, began to earn its reputation as a great winemaking estate in the 17th century. Acquiring a strong following in London in the early 18th century, Lafite found its way to the Versailles court, receiving acclaim as the “The King’s Wine”. The reputation did not diminish, achieving a pinnacle when it was ranked a First Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification.

On August 8, 1868, Baron James de Rothschild purchased Chateau Lafite, although he died just three months later leaving Lafite to his three sons. The years that followed were considered a golden age for the estate, producing a rich legacy of remarkable vintages.

Fortunes turned at the end of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, which were turbulent years. The vines suffered both a phylloxeric crisis and mildew. Then there was organized fraud, World War I, followed by the Great Depression, and finally the occupation of France during World War II. After this difficult period, Baron Elie de Rothschild was entrusted with the recovery of the Lafite estate, leading programs to restore the vineyards and the buildings, as well as becoming an active participant in tasting events and the founding of a regional guild.

The recovery and renewal period at Chateau Lafite was continued by his nephew, Baron Eric de Rothschild, who made great strides forward in the management of the estate and in the replanting and restoration of the vineyards. He also extended the horizons of the Domaines through new acquisitions both in France and abroad.

This famous First Growth is often described as perfumed, elegant and delicate, and one of the finest wines in Bordeaux. According to Baron Eric de Rothschild, Chateau Lafite has a beautiful, generous, and kindly soul that turns bare earth into heaven. The blend for this grand vin varies from vintage to vintage, but is typically 80-95% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5-20% Merlot, with the balance from Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.

The 2021 Lafite-Rothschild is a remarkable Bordeaux Blend that exemplifies the elegance and complexity of wines from the famed Pauillac region in Bordeaux, France. With a deep, almost opaque hue, this wine captivates the senses with its enticing aromas and impressive structure.

Upon opening a bottle of the 2021 Lafite-Rothschild, one is greeted with an intoxicating bouquet of dark berries, cigar box, loamy soil, black truffle, and violets. These inviting aromas set the stage for what is to come. On the palate, this wine is medium to full-bodied, revealing layers of flavor that unfold with each sip. The rich and concentrated nature of this wine is complemented by beautifully powdery tannins and lively acids, showcasing its impeccable balance. The finish is long and saline, leaving a lasting impression.

Renowned wine critic Robert Parker's Wine Advocate awarded this wine an impressive score of 97 points. He describes the 2021 Lafite-Rothschild as a brilliant wine that shares similarities with the formidable 1996 vintage. Parker praises its structure and balance, suggesting that it is likely to age almost immortal. This sentiment is echoed by other critics, such as Jane Anson, who notes that this is a long-ageing Lafite that should not be rushed to open.

The blend of this vintage is 96% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot, with Cabernet Sauvignon making up one of the highest percentages for a wine from Lafite. This composition contributes to the wine's power and complexity, with each varietal adding its own distinctive characteristics.

The 2021 Lafite-Rothschild is a wine that showcases the artistry and expertise of its producer, Lafite-Rothschild. Known for their commitment to quality, this esteemed producer has once again delivered a wine of exceptional caliber. With its regal and impressive style, this wine is sure to delight wine enthusiasts and collectors alike.

Overall, the 2021 Lafite-Rothschild is a wine that embodies the essence of Pauillac, offering a harmonious blend of flavors, impeccable structure, and the promise of longevity. Whether enjoyed now or cellared for years to come, this wine is a true gem from Bordeaux.
