Composed of all five Bordeaux varieties, Papillon is Orin Swift’s Cabernet based red wine. The goal was to make a stand-alone wine that incorporates all the majesty of Cabernet Sauvignon with the subtleties of Cabernet Franc and Merlot, and the power of Petit Verdot and Malbec. The label is a photograph taken by a good friend and fellow winemaker, Greg Gorman.

The 2021 Orin Swift Papillon is a proprietary blend hailing from the renowned Napa Valley in California. This red wine is crafted by Orin Swift, a producer known for its bold and expressive wines. The blend comprises five classic Bordeaux varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. Aged for 13 months in 44% new oak, it boasts an alcohol content of 15.5%.

According to Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, which awarded the wine a score of 93 points, the 2021 Papillon is described as not overly complex but notable for its boldness. The review mentions, "Still not bottled at the time I tasted it, the 2021 Papillon Red Wine is a five-variety Bordeaux blend that spends 13 months in 44% new oak." The Advocate highlights the aromatic profile of the wine, stating it offers "bold cherry and cassis aromas on the nose."

The wine's palate is characterized as full-bodied and velvety, suggesting a rich and smooth texture. The review also notes the wine's finish, describing it as "long, almost zesty," which indicates a lingering and vibrant aftertaste. While the complexity may not be the wine's strongest suit, its bold flavors and substantial body are emphasized as key attributes.

In summary, the 2021 Orin Swift Papillon stands out for its strong aromatic presence and velvety texture. The blend's time in new oak has imparted depth and a lasting finish, making it a robust choice for fans of full-bodied red wines. The score of 93 from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate underscores its quality and appeal within the realm of Napa Valley reds.
