Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, March 2024

(97+ points) The 2021 Val d'Arno di Sopra Galatrona shows extremely focused aromas, but very generous ones all the while, with soft mint, cherry and stracciatella over a full-bodied texture with soft layers of spice and...

The Wine Independent, August 2023

The 2021 Galatrona, 100% Merlot, is medium to deep garnet-purple in color. Quite closed to start, it requires a lot of swirling to bring out wonderfully pure notes of wild blueberries and juicy blackberries, followed by...

Galatrona is Petrolo's flagship and one of the most awarded wines of the estate. It is a wine of great structure on the palate, and wildly aromatic on the nose. First produced in 1994, this 100% Merlot comes from estate vines planted in the early 90’s. The vineyard extends over 3 hectares, and is the first vineyard of Merlot that Petrolo planted. The yield per vine is limited, allowing for the concentration of components fundamental to achieve the structure, elegance, balance and persistence wanted for this wine.

Macerated on the skins for 2 weeks or more, the pump-overs are done often and with considerable care to allow for complete and gentle extraction. Malolactic fermentation takes place in barriques, and the wine is then aged in new French barriques for approximately 18 months. During this period the wine is left for the first 6 months on the fine lees, which allows the finished product to achieve greater complexity.

The 2021 Petrolo Galatrona IGT is an exceptional Italian Merlot from Tuscany, reflecting a remarkable vintage with a formidable reputation. This red wine is characterized by its deep, vibrant color and a robust 14% alcohol content, sealed with a traditional cork closure.

Vinous' Antonio Galloni lauds this wine as "rich, deep, expansive," highlighting its "striking textural depth and structure," deserving a high score of 98. He emphasizes the wine's complexity with notes of dark fruit, sage, and mocha, suggesting patience will reward those who age it. Similarly, James Suckling also rated it 98, noting its "distinct aromas" of dried flowers and sage, complemented by "very fine tannins and fantastic length," recommending it is best after 2026.

Decanter awarded it a 97, praising its "gorgeous black cherry and blackcurrant aromas," and describing it as "smooth, ample, really quite seductive on the palate." This review notes the wine's "crunchy, crisp acidity" and highlights its potential for aging due to its time in French oak tonneaux and barriques. Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate also gave it a 97, describing "extremely focused aromas" with a "full-bodied texture" and "elegantly chalky quality to the tannins."

Wine Enthusiast's Danielle Callegari describes it as an "absolutely acrobatic feat in Merlot," with a score of 97, appreciating its complex nose and lively palate. Meanwhile, The Wine Independent and Wine Spectator also commend the wine, both scoring it 96, with notes of its "bright, energetic black fruits" and "polished tannins" offering a "superlong finish."

Overall, the 2021 Petrolo Galatrona is consistently praised for its balance, elegance, and aging potential, marking it a standout choice for Merlot enthusiasts.
