The 2021 Barbaresco Riserva Muncagota pours a bright red color and offers stunning aromatic complexity in its notes of redcurrants, incense, suede, and potpourri. Medium-bodied, it has refined tannins and a haunting...

Vinous, October 2025

The 2021 Barbaresco Riserva Muncagota is laced with strong floral and savory notes. Brisk acids and beams of supporting tannin give the 2021 its driving, tense personality. I expect those qualities will be positives for...

Produttori del Barbaresco’s Barbaresco Riserva “Muncagota” 2021 is a single-vineyard Nebbiolo from the Muncagota MGA in Barbaresco DOCG, Piedmont. It’s made in the cooperative’s firmly traditional idiom: long maceration of about 28 days, fermentation around 30°C, full malolactic, then roughly three years’ aging in large oak casks (25–50 hL), followed by bottle time before release. Alcohol is listed at 14.5% ABV. The Muncagota site is noted for calcareous limestone soils, a detail that fits the wine’s structural, mineral-edged profile in bottle.

Critical reception for the 2021 is excellent across the board, with several top-tier scores. Kerin O’Keefe delivers the standout review at 98 points, calling it “intensely fragrant and fabulous,” highlighting aromas of “rosemary, hay, camphor and crushed mint,” and describing a “full-bodied” palate “loaded with energy,” with “firm, well-integrated tannins” that “give the finish grip.” James Suckling (96 points) emphasizes a “balsamic style” with “herb, eucalyptus and potpourri,” plus “watermelon and mint-filled chocolate,” praising its “graceful attack,” “long, refreshing acidity,” and “savory finish.”

Jeb Dunnuck (96 points) focuses on finesse, citing “stunning aromatic complexity” (redcurrants, incense, suede, potpourri) and a “haunting, almost weightless feel,” while also reporting production of “roughly 13,333 bottles” and recommending “Drink 2027–2047.” Wine Spectator (95 points) similarly notes an “airy feel” and “bright flavors of strawberry, cherry, rose hip and mineral,” with the wine “tighten[ing] up on the finish” amid “chalky tannins,” and suggests 2029–2047.

Vinous (95 points) is the most cautionary on current approachability, describing “brisk acids” and “beams of supporting tannin” that make it “driving” and “tense,” and advising, “Give this time.” Taken together, the 2021 Muncagota reads as a high-energy, aromatic Riserva built for cellaring, with the best reviews marking it as one of the vintage’s most impressive wines.
