Produttori del Barbaresco’s 2021 Barbaresco DOCG Riserva “Rio Sordo” is a single-vineyard (MGA) Nebbiolo from one of the region’s benchmark cooperative producers. Made from 100% Nebbiolo grown on limestone and clay soils with sandy veins, it follows the house’s traditional method: an extended maceration of about 28 days and aging for roughly 30 months in large 25–50 hL oak casks. Listed alcohol is about 14.5% ABV.

Across critics, the picture is of a structured, ageworthy Rio Sordo that combines perfume with firmness. James Suckling (95) calls it “dark and floral,” with “potpourri,” “dried cherries,” and “tangy pomegranate,” then a “savory palate of candied orange peel,” finishing with “dusty yet ripe” tannins and “refreshing acidity.” Kerin O’Keefe (96) leans into the darker, balsamic side, noting “eucalyptus… iris, camphor and leather,” while the palate brings “ripe cherry, wild strawberry, orange zest, hazelnut and dark culinary spice,” with “firm, well-integrated tannins” and acidity that “keeps it balanced.”

Several excellent reviews elevate the 2021 to top-tier territory. Antonio Galloni for Vinous (96) writes that it “marries finesse and power,” highlighting “crushed rose petal, cedar, spice and tobacco,” and concluding, “The 2021 needs time, but it’s got the goods,” capped by an “explosive, aromatic finish.” Wine Spectator (96) emphasizes mass and persistence—“dense and even square-shouldered”—with black cherry and blackberry “shaded by iron and underbrush,” and a long finish, recommending 2029–2047.

Jeb Dunnuck delivers the high score at 97, praising a “jeweled ruby hue,” “framboise,” “wet river stones,” and “a mouthwatering granular texture,” adding that “the oak sits more in the background.” Dunnuck reports production at roughly 13,333 bottles and suggests a long window: 2027–2057. Overall, expect perfume, dark detail, and real tannic authority that rewards patience.
