jamessuckling.com, January 2025

Lots of violets, cola and blueberries on the nose, complemented by a clay pot note. Fascinating aromatics. The palate is medium- to full-bodied with polished tannins. A cohesive and complete wine that’s angular and...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, January 2025

This is the baby in the bunch, representing one of the newest additions to the Vietti portfolio, with the first vintage produced in 2018. The learning curve in Monvigliero is always steep, or so most winemakers tell me...

Wine Enthusiast, November 2025

A captivating bouquet of candied red cherries and raspberries intertwines with wild mint and delicate floral notes reminiscent of violet and rose petals. The palate demonstrates both power and finesse, where chewy...

Wine Spectator, December 2025

This red is aromatic and haunting for its strawberry, cherry, rose hip, sweet hay, iron and licorice aromas and flavors. Expressive and harmonious, this is also firmly structured and long on the complex, fruit- and...

jebdunnuck.com, May 2025

For the 2021 Barolo Monvigliero, the estate implemented some whole cluster fermentation with 60% in a sandwiched way in the fermentation and no submerged cap. The nose is lifted and spicy with aromas of nutmeg, cinnamon...

Vinous, January 2025

The 2021 Barolo Monvigliero is another step forward for Vietti. Aromatic and lifted, the 2021 is all class. The stems (60%) are evident but not as strong of a marker as they were in the first years. Stylistically, the...

Vietti’s Barolo Monvigliero 2021 is a single-vineyard Barolo from the Monvigliero cru in Verduno, made from 100% Nebbiolo. Vietti, founded in 1873 and based in Castiglione Falletto, has built its reputation on site-specific Barolos, and Monvigliero is one of the zone’s most perfume-driven addresses, shaped by limestone-rich marl soils and a south/southwest exposure. The winery ferments with significant stem inclusion—about 60% whole cluster—and the wine is matured in oak for around two years, coming in at roughly 14% alcohol.

This bottling drew an exceptional set of reviews. James Suckling awarded an excellent 98 points, highlighting “lots of violets, cola and blueberries,” plus “polished tannins,” calling it “a cohesive and complete wine… with subtlety, precision and elegance,” while noting it “needs at least four years to soften.” Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate also delivered an excellent 97 points; Monica Larner describes it as “pristine,” with “a delicate film of pink salt with garden herbs, lemon leaves and spring flowers,” adding that “it is a wine of extreme elegance.” Larner reports the fruit was harvested September 30, with a shorter 20-day maceration, and production of 8,663 bottles.

Wine Spectator (97 points) emphasizes both fragrance and structure, calling it “aromatic and haunting” with notes ranging from “strawberry, cherry, rose hip” to “iron and licorice,” and says it is “firmly structured and long,” recommending 2029–2048. Wine Enthusiast (excellent 97 points) finds “candied red cherries and raspberries… wild mint,” and praises “chewy, well-integrated tannins” that keep its “power and finesse” in balance, suggesting drinking from 2027. Vinous (95) calls it “another step forward for Vietti,” “taut” and “mineral-driven.” Jeb Dunnuck (95) underscores its lifted spice and “light chalky texture,” projecting a long 15–20 year window.
