Château Bellefont-Belcier 2022 is the grand vin of this Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé estate on the Right Bank, sourced from a south-facing, limestone-and-clay site in Saint-Laurent-des-Combes. The château has been under the Vignobles K umbrella since 2017, and 2022 is the “first full vintage” guided by technical director Emmanuelle Fulchi d’Aligny, newly arrived from Château Angélus, as Jane Anson notes.
The blend is consistently reported as Merlot-led, most reviewers citing 72% Merlot, 18% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. élevage details point to a measured oak program. Jeff Leve (The Wine Cellar Insider) reports maturation in “30% new French oak barrels, 30% foudres, and used oak barrels,” while Anson highlights “30% new oak barrels… 30% unusual egg-shaped wooden vats.” The Wine Independent adds that there was “less oak impact” in 2022, with more large oak vats used.
In glass, the wine is described with both floral lift and dark fruit weight. Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate’s Yohan Castaing calls it “fresh, delicate and complex,” with “iris, cassis and spices,” finishing “long” and “saline… with chalky dry extracts.” James Suckling’s excellent 96-point review emphasizes structure and tactility: “tense and pretty bright with lightly chewy and vibrating tannins,” with a “tight-grained, lengthy finish,” recommending it from 2028. Several other excellent reviews cluster at 95 points, including Decanter, Dunnuck, Leve, Anson, and Wine Advocate—signaling broad critical confidence in the wine’s quality and balance in a powerful year.
On the palate, reviewers repeatedly return to mineral drive and freshness. Leve highlights “the essence of minerality,” “crushed rocks,” and a “refreshing hint of mint,” while Decanter notes “high acidity with a salty tang on the finish.” The Wine Independent underscores cohesion, calling it “silky and sinewy,” and notes 15% alcohol “does not show on the palate.”
Vinous (Neal Martin) lands a bit lower at 92, praising purity and “countervailing acidity,” while finding it “just a tad opulent on the finish.” Overall, 2022 Bellefont-Belcier reads as a perfumed, mineral Saint-Émilion with polished tannins, strong length, and clear benefit from cellaring.
