Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy, October 2023

(90-93 points) This has just been racked to a small tank to keep on the lees. Pale lemon colour. This has the piercing stony quality that I associate with Baudines, with a lemon rinse, a refined and linear Chassagne.

Benjamin Leroux’s 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Baudines is a single-vineyard Chardonnay from one of Chassagne’s higher, stonier Premier Cru sites, close to the southern edge of the appellation near Santenay. Les Baudines is known for limestone-rich, rocky soils and a naturally taut profile, and this bottling is made in very small quantity—Berry Bros. & Rudd notes “only ~3 barrels produced,” roughly 900 bottles. The same source lists the wine at about 14.5% alcohol, consistent with the warm, dry 2022 growing season in Burgundy.

Leroux, based in Beaune, has built a reputation for precision and restraint since launching his domaine and négociant operation in 2007, after his early work at Domaine Comte Armand. His whites are typically handled gently—whole-cluster pressing and native-yeast fermentation are widely reported for the range—aiming to keep site character at the forefront. Elevage details for this specific cuvée in 2022 are not fully consistent across sources, with accounts ranging from little-to-no new oak to a more noticeable proportion; in practice, the intent appears to be to preserve clarity rather than add overt barrel seasoning.

The best professional note available is also an excellent one. Jasper Morris MW (Inside Burgundy) rated the wine 90–93 from barrel, calling it “pale lemon colour” with the “piercing stony quality that I associate with Baudines,” and a “lemon rinse,” concluding that it is “a refined and linear Chassagne.” That description captures the style: more about mineral drive and citrus clarity than obvious richness, even in a ripe year.

Overall, this is a focused, site-transparent Premier Cru white Burgundy: small-production, high-elevation Chassagne with citrus, stone, and a clean, steady line through the finish.
