Bovio’s Barolo Arborina 2022 is a single-cru Barolo DOCG from the Arborina vineyard in La Morra, made by the fourth-generation Bovio family estate. The estate is small by Barolo standards, producing about 65,000 bottles across roughly eight hectares, and Arborina is positioned as one of its flagship crus. In the cellar, the wine follows a traditional élevage: it is aged for about 20–24 months in large oak casks (the producer notes a move toward Slavonian oak), then given further time in cement before bottling.

Critical reception has been strong, led by an excellent 96-point review from James Suckling. He calls it “a subtle, fresh and vibrant style,” built around “licorice root and potpourri,” with layers of “dried oranges, red currants and strawberries.” Suckling also emphasizes the wine’s structure and balance, describing it as “full-bodied, savory and complex,” with “superripe, velvety tannins and refreshing acidity,” finishing “classy” with “tight-knit structure and cherry-pit flavors.” His drinking advice is telling for a serious Barolo: “Drinkable now but best from 2027.”

Jeb Dunnuck also rates the wine highly at 93 points, focusing on its aromatic clarity and finesse. He notes a “bright red hue” and scents of “wild raspberries, alpine herbs, cinnamon, and delicate wild spice.” On the palate, Dunnuck finds it “medium-bodied and refined,” shaped by “ultrafine tannins” and “a more modest but well-judged acidity that keeps the wine composed.” He adds that, while acidity is “more modest in this release,” the wine remains “charming and approachable,” recommending a 2026–2036 window.

Taken together, Arborina 2022 reads as a modern, polished La Morra Barolo: perfumed, red-fruited, and structured, with enough freshness to age, but an unusual willingness to show well early.
