Bovio’s Barolo Gattera 2022 is a single-vineyard Barolo from the Gattera cru in La Morra, one of the higher, well-exposed sites overlooking the Langhe. The Bovio family, based in Annunziata (La Morra), has been bottling site-specific Barolo here for decades, with the first Barolo Gattera released in 1977. The 2022 vintage in Piedmont was marked by drought and generally yielded wines that show their fruit and texture relatively early, though the better examples still carry structure for aging.

This bottle has drawn notably strong critical attention. James Suckling awarded an excellent 97 points (Jan. 13, 2025), calling it “complex,” led by “aromas of graphite, cedar, dried cherries and red currants” plus “sweet violets, blond tobacco and deep rhubarb.” He notes a polished feel up front—“soft and smooth on the attack with full body and integrated acidity”—followed by tannins that are “firm and dusty yet ripe and creamy in the finish,” finishing with “persistent licorice.” Suckling recommends patience: “Try from 2027.”

Jeb Dunnuck also rates it highly at 94 points (Apr. 8, 2026), emphasizing both fragrance and backbone. He reports it comes “from a south-facing site” and describes “fresh raspberries, cherries, orange peel, and wild herbs” on the nose. On the palate, Dunnuck finds it “medium-bodied but firmer, with more grip,” layering in “gravelly earth tones” and a “subtle savory, gamey richness” toward the close. His drinking window is broad for the vintage: “Drink 2026–2040.”

Taken together, the reviews point to a 2022 Barolo that balances La Morra perfume with real tannin presence, suited to near-term enjoyment with mid-term cellaring potential.
