The 2022 Cayuse Vineyards Syrah en Chamberlin Vineyard is a single-vineyard, 100% Syrah from the Walla Walla Valley AVA, drawn from biodynamically farmed vines planted in 2000 on “silty loam and basalt cobblestones,” according to Erin Brooks (Wine Advocate). It’s matured for 18 months in French oak at roughly 15–20% new wood, and bottled at 14.1% alcohol. Production is limited: Wine Spectator reports “449 cases made,” a figure Brooks also confirms.

This is a Cayuse Syrah built around savory detail and stony structure more than overt sweetness. Eric Guido calls it “dark and earthy…with a beguiling bouquet of undergrowth, wet stones, and black cherries,” and awards an excellent 98 points in Vinous, concluding, “It’s harmonious to the core.” Wine Spectator’s 97-point review is similarly strong, praising a wine that’s “rich and detailed,” with “raspberry and huckleberry laced with tapenade, lavender, river stone and black olive,” and recommending drinking “now through 2035.”

The wine’s signature meaty tones show up repeatedly. Jeb Dunnuck (96 points) highlights “meaty butcher shop…sanguine bacon fat and petrichor,” noting “broad-shouldered and long” tannins and suggesting it will “cellar through 2042.” James Suckling (96 points) emphasizes an “earthy, savory profile” of “smoked bacon, plum skins, charcoal, black peppercorns and stones,” describing it as “refined and textured,” though “tight and firm,” and advising, “Better from 2028.”

Brooks lands slightly more moderate at 93 points but underscores the wine’s balance: “a fine balance between concentrated, floral flavors and vibrant acidity,” with “approachable, rounded tannins” and an “open and ready to drink” feel. Taken together, the top reviews point to a standout 2022 Syrah that marries mineral drive, savory complexity, and serious aging capacity.
