Decanter, August 2025

The 2022 Howell Mountain estate, built entirely on Cabernet Sauvignon, was aged up to 32 months in 84% new French oak. The bouquet on this powerhouse is strikingly fresh, with a savoury richness reminiscent of cured black...

jamessuckling.com, January 2026

This minerally, earthy wine is highly impressive, with aromas of black and red currants, wet stones, bay laurel, bitter chocolate, dried flowers and walnuts. The palate is seamlessly balanced, showing depth of fruit...

jebdunnuck.com, March 2026

A smoking good 2022 and a wine that defines the vintage, the 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon raised 31-32 months in 84% new French oak. Its deep purple hue is followed by a captivating...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, October 2025

Dunn's 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is the first vintage in a while that didn't get 100% new French oak—it's just 84%. Subtle, cedary oak frames bold cherry and blueberry fruit on the nose of this medium- to...

Vinous, November 2025

(95+ points) The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain offers a striking interplay of vintage 2022 ripeness and Howell Mountain savoriness. Dried herbs, menthol, licorice, incense and blood orange stain the palate up...

Wine Spectator, May 2026

Mesquite and black pepper notes lead off, followed quickly by a black cherry paste and boysenberry compote core. Anise, apple wood and singed earth flavors filter through on the finish, which shows a touch of tarry grip...

Dunn Vineyards produces 100% Cabernet Sauvignon under two labels: Howell Mountain and Napa Valley. Around 2500 cases of Howell Mountain and about 1500 cases of Napa Valley are made each year. The Howell Mountain Cabernet is from 100% percent Howell Mountain fruit, while the Napa Valley includes up to 15% Napa Valley floor fruit, with the remainder of the fruit coming from Howell Mountain. This floor fruit contributes to the wine’s softer approach, even though the wines usually can be laid down for 15+ years.

The bottles differ in two ways: The Napa Valley has a foil seal, whereas the Howell Mountain has been hand dipped in red wax. The Howell Mountain wine label bears both h the sub appellation Howell Mountain, as well as the appellation Napa Valley while the Napa release only reads Napa Valley. The Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is usually more approachable at a younger age with its softer tannins whereas, the Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon is massive in fruit and tannins.
