DC 100

Decanter, April 2023

(DC 98-100 points) A luminous and utterly brilliant wine in 2022 that really sets itself apart. Hints of black bramble fruit, spicy peppercorns, violets, sweet cherries, crushed stones, ink and cocoa powder on the nose -...

(JS 99-100 points) This shows no gravity. The tannins are totally melted in the wine and give it fantastic structure, but the texture is so fresh and vivid. Crushed stone. Cloves. Chinese spices. Great finish. Opening...

jebdunnuck.com, May 2023

(98-100 points) Looking at the Grand Vin 2022 Château Léoville Las Cases, it has an almost Pauillac-like style in its ripe, powerful aromatics of graphite, lead pencil shavings, cassis, and liquid rock-like minerality...

(98-100 points) Inky in color, the wine is all about its full-body, intensity, levels of concentration, and sense of purity. The wine starts off with violets, cassis, blackberries, Cuban cigar wrapper, ash, smoke...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, April 2023

(WA 98-100 points) One of the wines of the vintage this year is the 2022 Léoville Las Cases, a monument in the making that combines unerring classicism with unusual sensuality and charm by the standards of this estate's...

The Wine Independent, May 2023

(98 - 100 points) A blend of 83.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10.5% Cabernet Franc, and 6% Merlot, with a pH of 3.8, the 2022 Leoville Las Cases is deep garnet-purple in color. It needs a lot of waking up before it strides...

Vinous, May 2023

(VN 98-100 points) The 2022 Léoville Las-Cases was picked 8-30 September with more infusion than extraction, matured in 84% new oak. Precocious, almost decadent blackberry and blueberry fruit on the nose, there is...

Heading to Léoville Las Cases in a super ripe year is always a good idea, as the musuclar tannins are balanced by a riper mouthfeel. As quietly confident as you would expect, this is packed with depth and intensity...

One of the oldest Medoc estates, Domaine de Leoville belonged to some of the wealthiest and most influential noble French families before it was acquired by the Las Cases family. Like many properties after the French Revolution, the estate was divided between 1826 and 1840 into the three Leovilles we know today: Leoville-Las Cases, Leoville-Poyferre and Leoville-Barton.

Chateau Leoville-Las Cases was created, thanks to a kind of birthright, from three-fifths of the original estate, including the very heart of the property. The Grand Vin has therefore been sourced from the best part of the original terroir since the 17th century.

Pierre Jean, Adolphe, and Gabriel de Las Cases were successive heirs to the property until 1900, when Theophile Skawinski purchased a share in the estate and became its manager. Leoville-Las Cases has now been managed by the same family since the late 19th century and is today represented by Jean-Hubert Delon, sole owner of the chateau and proprietor of Chateau Potensac in the Medoc and Chateau Nenin in Pomerol.

The Grand Vin is the product of exceptional terroirs from the heart of the original Leoville estate. These are located mainly in the Clos Leoville-Las Cases, which you pass as you leave the village of Saint-Julien for Pauillac. They extend over nearly 60 hectares producing Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc with a complex, polished expression and characteristics which are totally unique to the Grand Vin of Las Cases.

Introducing the 2022 Leoville-Las Cases, a Bordeaux Blend from the esteemed St Julien region of Bordeaux, France. This wine is a true gem, embodying the essence of its terroir and showcasing the incredible craftsmanship of Leoville-Las Cases.

In the glass, this wine reveals a deep, inky red color that immediately captures the eye. Its rich hue is a testament to the intensity and depth that awaits on the palate. The nose is a symphony of aromas, starting with the delicate scent of violets and leading into a captivating combination of cassis, blackberries, Cuban cigar wrapper, ash, smoke, licorice, and mint. Each element intertwines harmoniously, creating a complex and enticing olfactory experience.

On the palate, the Leoville-Las Cases 2022 showcases its full-bodied nature and impressive levels of concentration. The fruit is remarkably rich, enveloping the taste buds with a tapestry of black and blue fruit flavors. The tannins, strong and ripe, provide a firm structure that is both powerful and refined. There is a sense of refinement and lift that elevates this wine to new heights, while its depth of flavor and complexity demand time and patience to fully unfurl.

The finish of this wine is seamless and seemingly endless, with the wall of rich fruit lingering on the palate for a staggering 60 seconds. It is abundantly clear that Leoville-Las Cases is a wine that requires bottle aging, and with the 2022 vintage, it is predicted to shine after a decade of cellaring. Its potential for evolution and improvement over the course of 40-50 years is truly remarkable.

Crafted from a blend of 83.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10.5% Cabernet Franc, and 6% Merlot, this wine showcases the unique character and terroir of Leoville-Las Cases. The meticulous harvesting, which took place from September 8th to September 30th, resulted in a yield of 36 hectoliters per hectare, ensuring the utmost quality in every bottle.

The Leoville-Las Cases 2022 has received widespread acclaim from esteemed wine critics. Jeff Leve, from TheWineCellarInsider.com, awarded it an impressive score of 100 points, praising its full-body, intensity, levels of concentration, and sense of purity. Jeb Dunnuck, from jebdunnuck.com, also awarded it a perfect score of 100 points, noting its almost Pauillac-like style and flawless balance. Other critics, such as Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, James Suckling, Jane Anson, Vinous, and Decanter, have also bestowed it with scores ranging from 97 to 100 points, highlighting its exceptional quality and potential for greatness.

In conclusion, the 2022 Leoville-Las Cases is a wine that exudes elegance, power, and complexity. It is a true testament to the artistry of Leoville-Las Cases and the incredible terroir of the St Julien region. Whether enjoyed now or cellared for decades to come, this wine is sure to captivate and delight even the most discerning of palates.
