jebdunnuck.com, February 2025

Reminding me of the 2018 (as well as the 2009), if not slightly more concentrated, the 2022 Château Léoville Poyferré is one of the most opulent and flamboyant wines out of the Médoc in 2022, and it has incredible...

jamessuckling.com, January 2025

A mind-blowing Leoville Poyferre, probably one of the best for a long time. Huge depth and structure, showing a deep matrix of fruit full of fresh blackberries and a dash of ink and lead pencil. Such verticality on the...

Intense, powerful, delicious, creamy raspberry and black cherry fruits, textured and confident in its tannic grip, with a freshness that runs from opening to close of play. Underlines just how well St Julien delivered in...

The explosive nose with its show display of flowers, espresso, licorice, black cherries, spice, and tobacco grabs your attention. But, the palate is where the seals the deal with its non-stop display of luscious...

The Wine Independent, June 2025

The 2022 Léoville-Poyferré is a blend of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot and 4% Cabernet Franc, and the élevage was 18 to 20 months in 80% new oak. A smoky, brooding nose here, with dense layers of...

The Wine Palate, February 2026

The 2022 Léoville Poyferré is deep garnet‑purple in color. The nose is quite closed at the moment, slowly unfurling to reveal notes of plum preserves, crème de cassis, and blueberry pie, followed by nuances of lilacs...

Highly concentrated and deep on the palate, this extends vertically from the beginning with layers of fleshy blackcurrant, super juicy cherries and salty stones. I love the feeling in the mouth, it's still got some sticky...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, April 2023

(WA 94-96 points) The 2022 Léoville Poyferré has turned out very nicely, offering up aromas of crème de cassis, cherries, violets and creamy new oak, followed by a medium to full-bodied, rich and fleshy palate that's...

Vinous, February 2025

(96+ points) The 2022 Léoville-Poyferré showed a lot of potential from barrel and it does so now in bottle. Interestingly, it bursts out of the blocks aromatically for a minute then settles down, gaining delineation and...

Wine Spectator, January 2025

Solid, dark and winey, with a well-structured core that holds blackberry and plum reduction notes in a tightly knit mix of apple wood, licorice root and warm cast iron. The long and direct finish throws off hints of...

Chateau Leoville-Poyferre is elegant, finely balanced and complex with intense color, velvety texture and excellent aging potential.

Château Léoville Poyferré 2022 is a Saint‑Julien Second Growth that leans into the ripeness and concentration of this hot, dry Bordeaux vintage while keeping its shape. The grand vin is a Cabernet-led blend—58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, and 4% each Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot—raised 18–20 months in French oak, 80% new (as noted by Jeb Dunnuck and The Wine Independent). Alcohol is stated around 14% (The Wine Independent cites 14% on the label; Vinous reports 14.24%).

The top reviews are unequivocally excellent. Jeb Dunnuck awards 100 points, calling it “one of the most opulent and flamboyant wines out of the Médoc in 2022,” with “incredible intensity while staying light on its feet and graceful,” and a “seamless mouthfeel” plus “no hard edges.” James Suckling goes to 99 points, describing “huge depth and structure” and a finish that “goes on and on for more than a minute,” adding it was “one of the best wines of the day” at the UCGB tasting.

Other critics broadly reinforce that profile: deep fruit, polish, and confident structure. Jeff Leve (98) highlights an “explosive nose” and “luscious, silky-textured” palate, suggesting 2029–2055. Jane Anson (98) finds it “intense, powerful… with a freshness that runs from opening to close of play,” and notes Sara Lecompte‑Cuvelier as director and co‑owner.

Vinous’ Neal Martin (96+) observes it is “less full-throttle than other vintages,” with “purity… fine-boned tannins” and “nicely judged acidity,” neatly masking the alcohol. Decanter (96) emphasizes a “highly concentrated and deep” wine that “edg[es] the glamorous side with elegance and precision,” adding a reported pH of 3.77 and that Petit Verdot is 4% of the blend.

For cellaring, Wine Spectator (95) is explicit: “For the cellar,” best 2027–2042. Overall, 2022 looks like a rich, modern-styled Léoville Poyferré with unusually strong critical consensus at the top end.
