(JS 99-100 points) What a finish on this Pontet-Canet. So much energy and brightness. It's full-bodied yet so tight and focused with superb fruit and transparency. It is racy and fine with super fine texture. It's like...

jebdunnuck.com, May 2023

(97-99+ points) The 2022 Château Pontet-Canet is brilliant and should easily be up with the crème de la crème from the Médoc. Based on 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, and 4% each of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it...

TheWineCellarInsider.com, May 2023

(96-98 points) Deep purple with a blue hue in color, the wine is almost opaque in color. Cassis, flowers, plums, licorice, and tobacco leaf aromas adorn the perfume. It is already clear that with this wine, it is the...

Wine Enthusiast, December 2023

97-99 barrel sample. Great waves of spice and ripe tannins have been smoothed by the partial aging in amphoras. The wine is full of ripe black fruits with a sense of richness as well as balance. Obviously with great aging...

Vinous, May 2023

(VN 95-97 points) The 2022 Pontet-Canet is a surprising wine. Usually much more opulent, especially in warm, dry years, the 2022 comes across as restrained and understated. It is a wine of linear intensity rather than...

Decanter, April 2023

Vibrant, vivid purple colour in the glass, rich and deep. Smells bright, super fresh and expressive on the nose with freshly-picked blackcurrants and perfumed purple flowers - the Petit Verdot, really standing out. Clean...

Chateau Pontet-Canet is a Fifth Growth Bordeaux wine estate owned by the Tesseron family (of Cognac fame) since 1975. The estate is a rarity in the Medoc, having known only three owners over a course of three centuries.

The vineyard spans 81 hectares in Pauillac, atop an outcropping of Garonne gravel over limestone. After a first trial in 2004, which took place on 14 hectares, Pontet-Canet fully converted the estate to biodynamic agriculture. They obtained organic certification from Ecocert, biodynamic certification from Biodyvin in 2010, and from Demeter in 2014.

Alfred Tesseron uses horses to plow the vineyards of Pontet Canet since they are gentler and lighter than tractors. Because the horses never step in the same place twice, the soils are always aerated in different parts, bringing much needed oxygen to the soil.

The vines have an average age of 40 to 45 years. Their varietal plantings are Cabernet Sauvignon (62%), Merlot (32%), Cabernet Franc (4%) and three parcels of Petit Verdot (2%).

Chateau Pontet-Canet is bright and brilliant with full-bodied fruit, yet finesse, in the mouth. It expresses energy, tension and intensity.

The fruit is fermented with native yeast in semi-conical concrete tanks that facilitate punch-downs. The wine then macerates for an additional four weeks before being removed from the pomace for maturation. One-third of the wine is aged in large, concrete amphorae, designed expressly for Pontet-Canet. The rest ages in French oak barrels.

The 2022 Pontet-Canet is a Bordeaux Blend from the esteemed Pauillac sub-region of Bordeaux, France. This red wine exhibits a deep purple color with a blue hue, creating an almost opaque appearance. The wine is visually stunning and immediately captures the attention.

Upon swirling the glass, the aromas of cassis, flowers, plums, licorice, and tobacco leaf fill the air. These scents are an exquisite combination that entices the senses and promises a complex and delightful tasting experience.

On the palate, the 2022 Pontet-Canet showcases its purity in fruit with layers of glycerin-filled blackberries and plums. The wine is both lush and refined, offering a harmonious balance of flavors. The concentration of the wine is seamlessly blended with elegance, power, and purity, creating a truly remarkable tasting experience.

The finish of this wine is a standout feature, with a peppery and spicy note that lingers on the palate. Resounding minty-freshness and a touch of anise add complexity and depth to the long-lasting finish. What sets this wine apart is the absence of heat or over ripeness, showcasing the winemaker's skill in maintaining balance throughout the winemaking process.

The 2022 Pontet-Canet is a blend of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Petit Verdot. With an alcohol percentage of 14.7% ABV and a pH level of 3.8, this wine is a testament to the exceptional quality of the grapes and the meticulous winemaking techniques employed.

The grapes for this vintage were harvested between September 8th and September 28th, making it the longest and earliest harvest in the history of the estate. The wine is aging in a combination of 50% new French oak and 35% Amphora, further enhancing its complexity and aging potential.

This wine has received rave reviews from top wine critics, further affirming its exceptional quality. Jeff Leve awarded it a score of 98 points, praising its purity in fruit and the harmonious balance of flavors. Jeb Dunnuck gave it a score of 99 points, highlighting its incredible purity, richness, and structure.
