The 2022 Chardonnay “Rinconada Vineyard” bottling from Sandhi is the ripest wine in the lineup this year, coming in at 13.4 percent alcohol in this vintage. The bouquet is deep, bright and very expressive, hopping from the glass in a mix of pineapple, apple, a lovely base of soil tones, gently musky floral tones, just a hint of underlying hazelnut and a deft framing of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, ripe and zesty, with a superb core of fruit, fine soil undertow and grip, a lovely spine of acidity and a very long, complex and impeccably balanced finish. I really love the backend lift here! This wine is already very tasty, but a few years in the cellar will give it time to unfold its secondary layers of complexity.
