Far Niente’s 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon is a Napa Valley red from the longtime Oakville estate, a producer best known for polished, ageworthy Cabernet. The wine has drawn strong critical reception across the board, led by an excellent 96-point review from James Suckling, who calls it “deep, dark and spicy” with aromas of “black and red currants, graphite, potpourri, dried flowers, herbs and wet river stones.” He highlights a “full-bodied” palate with “generous texture, fine-grained tannins and a long, mouthwatering finish,” adding that its “tension and purity” are matched by “plenty of generosity.”
Jeb Dunnuck also rates it highly at 95 points, noting “rocking aromatics of ripe, sweet cassis, graphite, spring flowers, and hints of classy, spicy oak.” Dunnuck emphasizes structure and poise—“a focused, elegant mouthfeel” with “nicely integrated acidity”—and calls it “an incredibly classy, satisfying, and classic Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon,” projecting a long runway: “Drink 2025-2045” and “keep for 15-20 years if well stored.”
Two additional 94-point reviews underline the wine’s consistency. Wine Enthusiast’s Tom R. Capo points to precision and lift, citing “focused aromas of blackberry compote, plum skin, violets, and coffee,” followed by “bright acidity balancing grippy tannic structure” and flavors that move through “baked black cherry, currant, cinnamon, tobacco, and flowers across the finish.” Wine Spectator similarly describes it as “well-realized,” with a “solidly ripe core of boysenberry and blackberry pâte de fruit,” plus accents of “licorice snap, violet, cast iron and menthol,” finishing “solidly grippy” and driven by “the vintage’s succulence.” Wine Spectator reports 15,000 cases made and suggests the best window is 2027–2038.
Taken together, the 2023 reads as a dark-fruited, firmly structured Napa Cabernet with aromatic detail, freshening acidity, and clear aging potential.
