Hartford, founded in 1994 by Don and Jennifer Hartford, sits about 15 miles from the Pacific Ocean, and the winery is known for small-lot work under winemaker Jeff Stewart. The “Old Vine” designation points to heritage sites in the area—often in the 80–100+ year range—and the wine is positioned as a concentrated yet balanced expression of Zinfandel from a region better known for Pinot Noir.

Critical reception is notably strong. The top review comes from Jeb Dunnuck, who awarded an excellent 95 points, emphasizing both depth and structure. He notes it is “pouring a dark magenta/purple color,” with flavors and aromas of “black cherry cordial, dark chocolate, lavender oils, wet stones, and dark sappy earth.” Dunnuck describes a “full-bodied” palate with a “broad-shouldered tannic structure,” adding that “refreshing acidity holds this wine together” and that it “has the ability to age over the coming 10 years.”

Vinous also rated it highly at 94 points, with Billy Norris characterizing the wine as “all old-school cool.” He calls it “rustic and savory,” highlighting “cracked black pepper, garrigue, wild herbs and crunchy red raspberry,” delivered in “a deceptively mid-weight frame,” with “freshness to burn.” Vinous reports the wine is “a blend of fruit from six vineyards,” underscoring its multi-site old-vine sourcing.

Wine Spectator’s 93-point review reinforces the energetic side of the profile, calling it “energetic and full of zesty raspberry, briar patch and green peppercorn accents that gather tension and length on the finish.” Wine Spectator also notes a production of 1,459 cases and suggests drinking “now through 2034.”
