Vinous, April 2024

(VN 93-96 points) The 2023 Haut-Batailley is another impressive wine from this Chateau. There's plenty of the typical dark fruit and overall breadth that is such a signature, but the tannins show greater finesse than in...

(93-95 points) The 2023 Château Haut-Batailley brings a much more focused, serious style while still staying in the elegant, vibrant style of the vintage. Based on 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, and 4% Petit Verdot...

Delivering elegance and finesse, this showcases why Haut-Batailley is so different in personality from Lynch Bages in this stable of wines, with a fragrant violet and peony note that takes it almost into St Julien, while...

(WA 91-93 points) The 2023 Haut-Batailley is a blend of 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot that increasingly resembles its stablemate Lynch Bages in style. Offering up aromas of dark berries, plums...

Chateau Haut-Batailley is a Left Bank Bordeaux wine property that was originally part of Chateau Batailley, a Fifth Growth in the 1855 Classification. Jointly owned by Francis and Marcel Borie, they divided the estate between them in 1942.

Marcel took the Batailley half, including the chateau. The smaller part went to Francis who purchased additional vineyard land from Chateau Duhart-Milon to increase the size of his Haut Batailley vineyards. Now managed by Francois-Xavier Borie, Chateau Haut-Batailley is part of the Borie family of estates that includes Chateau Ducru-Beaucaillou and Chateau Grand-Puy-Lacoste.

The 22 hectares of Chateau Haut-Batailley are on a gently sloping outcrop at the southern edge of Pauillac. They are planted with 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc on exceptional soils of deep gravel and alluvial stones. This ensures excellent drainage of rainwater and encourages deep roots. The average age of the vines is 35 years old.

In 2005, Francois-Xavier Borie began a major program of construction, building a modern vat house, new harvest facilities and a bottling room, all in harmony with the pre-existing decor.

Chateau Haut-Batailley is a Bordeaux blend dominated by a high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes are hand-harvested and carefully sorted both before and after de-stemming.

Prior to fermentation, the grapes undergo a long, cool maceration of three weeks. When fermentation is complete, the wines age from 16 to 18 month in French oak barrels, 60% of which are new.

The 2023 Haut Batailley is a truly exceptional example of a Bordeaux Blend, hailing from the prestigious Pauillac sub-region of Bordeaux, France. As per the esteemed reviews, this wine has earned great admiration for its structure, focus, and remarkable finesse.

Interlacing notes of blackberries, currants, and a tantalizing hint of crushed stone create an intriguing aromatic profile, as highlighted by James Suckling. This wine has an impressively solid line of tannins that runs throughout, contributing to its medium to full body and silky texture. There is a question posed by Suckling, "Could this vintage be even better than 2022?" suggesting the continual evolution and improvement in Haut Batailley's offerings.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate has compared the 2023 Haut Batailley with its stablemate, Lynch Bages, in terms of style. It exudes aromas of dark berries, plums, pencil shavings, and creamy new oak, all layered atop generously extracted, youthfully chewy tannins. The finish is long and lusty, promising a wine that will age gracefully.

Vinous provides a similar sentiment, highlighting the wine's dark fruit character, and the signature breadth that Haut Batailley is known for. The tannins are lauded for their finesse, believed to be a significant improvement from previous years. The presence of black cherry, plum, lavender, cloves, leather, and licorice only adds to the complexity of this wine.

Jane Anson highlights the unique personality of this wine, distinguishing it from its stablemate, Lynch Bages. The distinct notes of violet and peony root it in the Pauillac region, while smoke, campfire, and slate interact harmoniously with the blackberry and bilberry fruits. The wine is aged in 65% new oak, contributing to the elegance and finesse that has become synonymous with Haut Batailley.

Overall, the 2023 Haut Batailley is a testament to the winemaking prowess of its producer. This Bordeaux Blend is a captivating red wine that promises a memorable tasting experience.
