The 2023 Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Sous Roche Dumay Blanc from Domaine Joseph Colin is a Chardonnay Premier Cru from the Côte de Beaune in Burgundy. It’s a site-driven white from Saint-Aubin, built around limestone: importer details describe a west-facing slope with very little clay and roughly 90% chalk/limestone, planted to vines more than 20 years old. The parcel sits high, around 350 meters, and, despite the elevation, it “gets the evening sun,” which helps explain why this bottling often shows both cut and ripeness. Listed alcohol is 13.0%.

Winemaking, as presented by the importer, is classic and measured: fermentation with indigenous yeasts followed by barrel élevage with about 25% new oak. The intent reads as texture and seasoning rather than overt wood, keeping the focus on the vineyard’s mineral profile and naturally bright structure.

This is also a notably well-reviewed 2023 from the domaine. Jasper Morris (Inside Burgundy) rated it 93 points, an excellent result for the appellation and a strong endorsement of quality in the vintage. Morris highlights the wine’s clarity of site and its balance between concentration and freshness, calling it “lemon yellow from this slightly sunnier site, albeit at altitude.” On the palate, he notes “dense concentration… still fresh enough,” with “the white fruit flesh… a little more apparent,” adding that this is “quite a good thing.” That comment is telling: the wine is not simply a lean, stony Saint-Aubin, but one that brings a bit more flesh without losing lift.

Overall, expect a Premier Cru white that emphasizes citrus-toned brightness and limestone detail, with a fuller core of white fruit than some higher, cooler Saint-Aubin sites—structured, balanced, and clearly made with precision.
