The first Lytton Springs was made in 1972 from vines planted at the turn of the century on the eastern half of the vineyard. The vineyard is planted to Zinfandel and complementary varietals on gravelly clay soil.

The wine is a blend of Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Carignane, and Mataro (Mourvedre). Grapes are sustainably grown, hand harvested, destemmed and crushed, fermented on the native yeasts, and followed by full malolactic on the naturally occurring bacteria.

On the nose are aromas of ripe blackberry, pepper, licorice and a hint of vanilla. There is concentrated plum and black cherry fruit on the palate with supple tannins, minerality and balanced acidity. The finish is long and layered with notes of ripe fig and dried herbs.

The 2023 Ridge Lytton Springs Proprietary Red Wine is a well-crafted blend of 76% Zinfandel, 14% Petite Sirah, 7% Carignane, 2% Alicante Bouschet, and 1% Mataro, originating from Ridge's esteemed estate vineyard in Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma. This vintage has garnered praise for its structured elegance and balanced composition, a result of a cooler growing season that delayed harvest, allowing for a more nuanced and restrained expression compared to previous years.

Jeb Dunnuck awarded the wine an impressive 98 points, highlighting its "initial chewiness that leads to fine tannins" and the supportive role of "well-woven oak" in its medium-bodied, elegant frame. He suggests enjoying this wine now through 2033. Decanter also lauded the wine with a 96-point score, noting its "fresh aromas of herbs" and a fruit profile that includes "ripe red and black berries" with a touch of plums and cherries, emphasizing its balance and potential to evolve until 2035.

James Suckling and Vinous both gave the wine a 95-point score. Suckling appreciated the wine's "bright and perfumed aromas" and "vibrant, crunchy acidity," while Vinous described it as "powerfully aromatic and expressive," with "silk" texture and "remarkable persistence and poise." Wine Spectator also awarded 95 points, recognizing its "bold blackberry flavors" and "big but refined tannins."

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate rated the wine at 94 points, commending its elegance and expressiveness, with "pure aromas of black cherry, blueberry," and a finish "replete with soaring floral perfume." Overall, the 2023 Ridge Lytton Springs is a highly-rated wine noted for its balance, complexity, and aging potential, making it a compelling choice for both immediate enjoyment and long-term cellaring.
