The 2023 Rudi Pichler Grüner Veltliner Federspiel is a dry white from Austria’s Wachau DAC, made from 100% Grüner Veltliner. It sits in the Wachau’s Federspiel category—typically the region’s mid-weight, moderate-alcohol style—and is built around clarity rather than richness. The cuvée pulls from widely distributed estate holdings: James Suckling notes it is “a cuvee from around 20 vineyard sites,” and Vinous reports it was “harvested across the estate in varying sites,” with “a two-week difference in harvest date” depending on location.

In the glass, this wine is repeatedly described as driven by freshness, spice, and stony detail. Suckling’s 92-point review is an excellent score for an appellation Federspiel and frames the style clearly: “Very fresh and crisp, with plenty of substance,” showing “green peppercorn and garden herb character” and finishing “so clean and straight in the long, herbal and appley finish.” He also flags the wine as “Sustainable” and concludes, “Drink or hold.”

Vinous (91 points), reviewed by Anne Krebiehl MW, adds more texture and depth to the picture, especially for the classification. Aromatically, it opens with “rich yeast, imbued with russet pear peel,” alongside “a slight sense of pepper.” On the palate it is “juicy and ripe” but kept in check by “a lovely stony aspect amidst its creaminess,” with “concentration, savoriness and well-contained but undoubted power, especially for a Federspiel.” With air, Krebiehl finds “a lovely echo of white pepper,” and she emphasizes that it is “(Bone-dry).”

Wine Spectator’s 90-point review reinforces the fruit-and-herb profile, calling it “fresh, precise” with “juicy star fruit and nectarine… flecked with sweet alpine herb and floral notes,” backed by “dried spice and mineral underpinnings” and a “nicely firm” finish. Suggested drinking window: now through 2029.
