Domaine Michel Guignier’s Morgon “Canon” is a cru Beaujolais made from 100% Gamay in Villié-Morgon, in eastern France. Guignier, a fourth-generation grower who founded his domaine in 1989, has been certified organic since 2006 and is widely associated with an artisanal, low-intervention Beaujolais approach. In the cellar, the estate is known for traditional Beaujolais-style work, including whole-cluster fermentation with native yeasts and restrained use of additions.

“Canon” is positioned as a more serious, structured expression of Morgon, shaped by the appellation’s granitic terrain. A retailer description attributes the cuvée to vines “over 70 years old on poor granitic soils,” a detail that fits the wine’s reputation for depth, even if it is not consistently documented across sources. The same source describes élevage of roughly 10 months in neutral oak on fine lees—an approach designed to build texture without overt new-oak flavor.

Critics tend to frame Canon as a Morgon with both energy and backbone. Wine Enthusiast’s Roger Voss, reviewing the 2021, called it “a structured wine,” noting that “bold tannins” underline “blackberry fruits and acidity,” and adding that “the tannins demand further aging, so drink from 2024.” That’s a clear endorsement of its ability to settle and broaden with time in bottle.

More recently, the wine has also earned an excellent review from JamesSuckling.com. In a 94-point assessment dated 4/10/2026, critic Kevin Davy describes it as “crunchy, lively and chiseled,” with “forest berry aromas,” “sleek tannins and fresh acidity,” and a “racy finish,” concluding: “Drink or hold.” Taken together, the notes point to a Morgon that aims for freshness and drive, while still offering the tannin structure that makes the cru compelling beyond its early fruit.
