Vinous, August 2026

The 2024 Boggina B is one of the best wines I have tasted from Petrolo. Aromatic and pliant, with superb persistence, the 2024 dazzles from start to finish. Lemon confit, marzipan, white flowers and mint race across the...

Petrolo’s Bòggina B Trebbiano Toscana IGT 2024 is a single-minded statement about what Trebbiano Toscano can do when treated as a serious, age-worthy white. Made from 100% Trebbiano Toscano in the Valdarno hills of Tuscany, it comes from heritage material: the estate notes that the vines were originally selected from local plantings established in the 1970s, with the key clones later replanted around the historic Bòggina area. Petrolo is certified organic and the wine is made in small volume—about 14,000 bottles per vintage—underscoring its role as a flagship rather than a routine production white.

The winemaking is central to the style. Bòggina B is fermented and then held on fine lees for roughly two years in oak tonneaux (around 500 liters), an unusually long élevage for Trebbiano. The point is not overt oakiness so much as building texture and complexity while keeping the grape’s natural energy; Petrolo positions the wine as an homage to the region’s once-prestigious white wines.

The 2024 has already drawn an excellent review. James Suckling awarded it 97 points and called it “one of Italy’s best whites,” highlighting aromas of “honeysuckle, lavender, chalk, salt and dried lemons,” alongside “apples and orange blossoms.” On the palate, Suckling emphasizes structure over softness, describing a “medium-bodied” wine with “firm texture and a racy finish,” concluding “lemony and limey with honey and nuts.” He adds, “Love the texture and length,” and recommends “Drink or hold,” a clear nod to its capacity to develop further.

One practical note for buyers: Suckling mentions it is “a little cloudy, but don’t worry about it,” suggesting an unforced, minimally cosmetic approach in the cellar rather than a flaw in flavor.
