Decanter, September 2026

I've been particularly impressed with the last few vintages of Galatrona, and this 2024 doesn't disappoint. It opens with cool red and blue fruit aromas along with touches of petrichor (think rain on tarmac), violets and...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, August 2026

The 2024 Galatrona (100% Merlot) is a seriously beautiful, vivid wine. Blue/purplish fruit, lavender, mint and espresso are all laced together in the glass. Just bottled, the 2024 is very expressive. I can't remember a...

Galatrona is Petrolo's flagship and one of the most awarded wines of the estate. It is a wine of great structure on the palate, and wildly aromatic on the nose. First produced in 1994, this 100% Merlot comes from estate vines planted in the early 90’s. The vineyard extends over 3 hectares, and is the first vineyard of Merlot that Petrolo planted. The yield per vine is limited, allowing for the concentration of components fundamental to achieve the structure, elegance, balance and persistence wanted for this wine.

Macerated on the skins for 2 weeks or more, the pump-overs are done often and with considerable care to allow for complete and gentle extraction. Malolactic fermentation takes place in barriques, and the wine is then aged in new French barriques for approximately 18 months. During this period the wine is left for the first 6 months on the fine lees, which allows the finished product to achieve greater complexity.

Petrolo’s Galatrona 2024 is the estate’s flagship Merlot, sourced entirely from the single Galatrona vineyard in Tuscany’s Val d’Arno di Sopra. The winery describes it as Val d’Arno di Sopra DOC – Vigna Galatrona (not IGT), and the identity and makeup are clear: it’s “100% Merlot,” first produced in 1994, with production of “about 30,000 bottles” in a typical year (Petrolo).

Galatrona comes from a 10-hectare site planted from the late 1980s into the mid-1990s with “low-vigor Bordeaux clones” (Petrolo). The vineyard sits at roughly “300 m asl” with a “south-eastern exposure,” and the soils are notably clay-forward—“rich in clay with shale, marl, and sandstones” (Petrolo). That clay matters in this part of Tuscany: Petrolo notes it “retains moisture that Merlot needs in hot Tuscan summers,” helping the wine deliver an “elegant, full-bodied” profile even when conditions are less straightforward.

Farming and cellar choices reinforce a polished, terroir-driven style. Petrolo reports “natural and sustainable farming since 2004” and “official Organic Certification in 2016.” In the cellar, fermentation is with “native yeasts in cement vats,” followed by maturation in French barriques—“a third new”—for “~18–20 months,” with bâtonnage of fine lees early in élevage (Petrolo). The net effect, on paper, is a Merlot aimed at depth and structure without losing freshness.

While there were no verified professional critic scores available specifically for the 2024 vintage at the time of research, the wine’s broader reputation remains a major part of its story. Wine Spectator has famously called Galatrona “Tuscany’s answer to Petrus,” a line that captures its standing as a benchmark, high-ambition Tuscan Merlot. For 2024, a trade description points to a “cool, wet spring” and a summer with “periodic rain events,” implying close selection work in the vineyards (Honest Grapes).
