Alter Ego is a different, nuanced expression of the Chateau Palmer terroir. Born with the 1998 vintage, Alter Ego resulted from a new approach to selecting and blending, intended to interpret the Chateau Palmer terroir differently without departing from the values that make the reputation of the estate’s wines – namely, finesse and elegance, aromatic richness, harmony and length.

Made in roughly the same volume as Chateau Palmer, Alter Ego spends less time in oak, just 16 to 18 months, and only 25% to 40% of the wood is new.

Offering intense, crispy and juicy fruits, Alter Ego is a spontaneous uninhibited wine, soft and round as soon as it has finished barrel aging. Its lush aromas and supple tannins make it a wine that can be appreciated in the first years after bottling.

Alter Ego de Palmer 2025 is the second wine of Château Palmer, the Margaux Third Growth known for its perfume and supple textures. Drawn from the same estate vineyards, Alter Ego is shaped for earlier approachability, and the 2025 shows that intent clearly across the early tastings.

Critics consistently describe a vivid, aromatic profile and a forward, polished palate. Antonio Galloni (Vinous) calls it “bold, juicy and super expressive right out of the gate,” praising its “total pleasure and seduction” and concluding that “all the elements are so well balanced,” with flavors that run through “red plum, mocha, cedar, espresso and cinnamon,” plus “a kick of blood orange” on the finish. That (94–96) point view is one of the wine’s standout reviews, positioning this as an especially strong showing for the label.

The technical picture aligns with the freshness reviewers note. Several outlets report 13% alcohol and pH 3.65 (Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate; Jeb Dunnuck; The Wine Palate), suggesting a restrained, energetic frame. William Kelley (Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate) emphasizes “lively acids” and “sweet, powdery tannin” on a “fleshy and concentrated palate,” adding that the estate’s low yields—20 hectoliters per hectare—are now familiar at Palmer. On élevage, Jeb Dunnuck reports the wine is being raised in “20% new barriques and foudres,” while Decanter notes “15% press wine” and finds it “quiet, calm… with power and muscles but well integrated and not shouting,” pointing to “crystalline blueberry” purity and firm, licorice-edged structure.

Blend details vary by source, but most reviewers cite 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and 6% Petit Verdot, underscoring a Cabernet-leaning expression in 2025. Overall, the strongest reviews suggest a refined, aromatic Margaux built on freshness, polish, and immediate drinkability, with enough grip to reward patience.
