(97-99 points) Smoke, licorice, charcoal, black raspberries, espresso, dark chocolate, a mix, and floral aromatics open the perfume. On the palate, the wine is elegant, energetic, deep, and long. There is a sense of...

(96-98 points) (Saint-Émilion; 84% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, 6% Cabernet Sauvignon; a final yield of 28 hl/ha; 14% ABV; tasted at the property). Nutty at first aromatically, which I wasn't quite expecting. Saline in its...

(96-98 points) Deep ruby-hued and showing a dense, inward, powerful profile that may be due to a higher percentage of Cabernet Franc than normal, the 2025 Clos Fourtet offers ripe currants, black cherries, graphite...

Clos Fourtet 2025 is the grand vin of this walled, 21-hectare Saint-Émilion Premier Grand Cru Classé estate on the limestone plateau beside the village. The blend is confirmed by multiple reviewers as 84% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon. Several also report 14% ABV, a notably fresh 3.4 pH, and modest yields of 28 hl/ha. Harvest dates are given as September 8–22 (Jane Anson) and September 9–22 (Jeff Leve).

In the cellar, the technical story is precision and restraint. Antonio Galloni (Vinous) notes “cool fermentations,” with most lots seeing “21–26 days on skins,” plus a shift to malolactic fermentation in tank that has “lowered the wines’ oak imprint” and “highlighted fruit purity.” Elevage is described as about 40% new French oak, with the remainder in one-year barrels, and a small amphora component (Decanter cites 2% clay amphora).

Stylistically, the 2025 is widely framed as a mineral, limestone-driven Clos Fourtet with both depth and lift. Galloni calls it “elegant, polished and super refined,” with “bracing mineral notes” and “magnificent balance,” concluding, “The 2025 is positively stellar” (an excellent review at 98). Decanter likewise awards an excellent 97, emphasizing “supple and so juicy” fruit, “beautiful acidity giving tension,” and a “chalky, flint and graphite finish.” Jane Anson (97) highlights “powerful tannins” with a “slow and gentle build,” calling it “concentrated, elegant [and] savoury.”

The top-end scores are emphatic: Falstaff International rates it 99, praising a “mineral-salty” profile, “silky tannins,” and “great dynamism and vitality.” Jeff Leve also gives 99 (97–99), describing an “elegant, energetic, deep, and long” wine and recommending a long window, “Drink from 2030–2060.” Even where structure is stressed, it’s framed as a virtue: The Wine Independent notes “notable tannins” and expects “5–7 years of cellaring.”
