Winedoctor, April 2026

jamessuckling.com, April 2026

(96-97 points) A dense yet open-grained red. It’s layered, with dusty tannins that give it a velvety texture and a medium- to full-bodied palate with plum, currant and cedar flavors. Juicy. 13% alcohol. Merlot, cabernet...

The 2025 Château Figeac is the Saint-Émilion Premier Grand Cru Classé A estate’s grand vin from its gravel-rich western terroir, a site that consistently supports a more Cabernet-influenced profile than many Right Bank peers. This vintage is still assessed from barrel, but the early critical picture is unusually consistent: high aroma definition, controlled ripeness, and firm structure without heaviness.

Blend details are well documented across reviewers: 38% Merlot, 32% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 30% Cabernet Franc (Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate; Jeb Dunnuck; Winedoctor; The Wine Cellar Insider). Several also note that fully 90% of production went into the grand vin (Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate; Jane Anson; Decanter), with yields around 25 hl/ha (Vinous; Decanter; Jane Anson; Leve). Harvest dates are cited as September 1–19 (Jane Anson; Leve; Winedoctor), with modest alcohol around 13–13.2% and pH about 3.64–3.66 (Vinous; Dunnuck; Decanter; Leve).

Aromatically, writers converge on a classical, Cabernet-leaning register: Jeb Dunnuck calls it “ultra-classic” with “cassis, violets, graphite, and leafy tobacco,” while Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate highlights “ripe cherries and minty blackberries… pencil lead and burning embers.” Vinous describes a “powerful, deeply structured wine” where “dark-fleshed fruit, mocha, incense, scorched earth, tobacco and grilled herbs soar.”

On the palate, multiple critics emphasize balance and finesse within concentration. Dunnuck cites an “incredibly pure, graceful mouthfeel” and “flawless balance,” and Decanter praises “focused, precise and detailed” tannins with “pure refinement.” The Wine Independent underscores that it is “never a heavy weigh,” suggesting earlier approachability than some vintages.

Excellent reviews stand out. Falstaff International awards 100 points and calls it “perhaps the most precise Figeac ever.” The Wine Palate also gives 100, describing a “very long” finish with “amazing tension.” Jeff Leve (The Wine Cellar Insider) likewise posts a 98–100 range and describes length “for close to 60 seconds,” projecting a 2030–2065 drinking window.
