Château Mouton Rothschild 2025 is the Pauillac First Growth’s grand vin, and early barrel tastings suggest a vintage built around an unusually Cabernet-driven profile. Multiple reviewers report the highest Cabernet Sauvignon proportion ever used at the estate: typically “98% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Merlot,” with Winedoctor and The Drinks Business citing 98.2/1.8. Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate adds that the grand vin represents “52% of the production” and comes in at “13.1% alcohol,” alongside pH 3.76 (also noted by Jane Anson, Jeb Dunnuck, Drinks Business, and Jeff Leve). Anson reports harvest dates of September 5 to 20 and “100% new oak.”
The critical reception is exceptional, with several potential or outright perfect scores. Jane Anson (janeanson.com) calls it “stately and reserved at first, then totally joyful,” praising “the right austerity” and “fabulous hidden depths.” James Suckling rates it 100 (99–100), describing “mesmerizing perfumes” and “ultra-fine tannins and an endless finish.” Falstaff International also lands at 100, emphasizing “fresh dark berry fruit,” “fine, silky tannins,” and an “elegant and precise” frame.
High-90s enthusiasm is widespread. Vinous’ Antonio Galloni (98; 96–98) calls it “dense and brooding,” with “graphite, lavender, rose petal and menthol” on the finish. Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate (99; 97–99) highlights “crème de cassis, blueberries, espresso roast, cigar wrapper and violet,” and notes that “small berries… explain this Mouton’s remarkable intensity of flavor.” Decanter (98) deems it “a fabulous Mouton,” “more seductive than other wines from Pauillac this year,” with “cola and mint touches” and “gorgeous tannins, chalky… but soft.”
A few notes flag its youth and structure rather than any real shortcoming. The Wine Independent finds it “still tannic” with hints of “wood, green pepper and soil,” yet emphasizes a “river of juicy fruit” and expects earlier approachability for the vintage. Overall, the 2025 Mouton looks set to combine Cabernet classicism with polish, energy, and long-term upside.
