While the ‘satellite’ AOC of Côtes de Castillon may not be so well known as neighboring Saint Emilion, the terroir here is yielding some of the finest right bank values we’ve ever tasted. Unlike most sub-$30 reds from the region, Chateau Joanin Becot has been called a “dead ringer for a top Pomerol” (Parker), and in 2016 this classic Right Bank blend of Merlot and Cab Franc is certainly living up to the reputation. James Suckling declared it “top for the appellation”, and for Bordeaux fans, this is an incredible find for only $27.94. With a decade or more of life ahead, this is the perfect Bordeaux to grab by the case.

Despite its price and AOC, Joanin Becot is angling to be more than just a ‘value’ name, and per the Wine Advocate, they are “one of the top performing Côte de Castillon crus.” The secret is always in the soil, as the best producers in the Côtes de Castillon share the same elevation and soil type as the plateau of Saint Emilion, with limestone and clay. 2016 was an “epic vintage” (Galloni) for Bordeaux, and there is no better time to grab more affordable options like Joanin Becot, since it packs a ton of quality in the bottle for such a good price!

94 points, James Suckling: "Aromas of blackberries and blackcurrants. Hints of fresh and wet earth. Full-bodied, very tight and polished with ultra-fine tannins and a beautiful finish. Shows intensity and brightness. Exciting. Top for the appellation. Needs five to six years to come together, but already gorgeous."

92 points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Joanin Becot is blended of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, aged on the lees in 65% new and 35% one-year-old oak for 15 months. Deep garnet-purple colored, it features warm plums, blackberry pie and wild blueberries aromas with touches of underbrush and menthol plus a waft of roses. The palate is medium to full-bodied, firm and plush with a good fruit core and perfumed finish. Drink 2019-2033"
