Cru Beaujolais’ spiritual and historical connection to Burgundy (they are part of the same administrative region) is frequently touted by its most ardent fans, but really it’s Beaujolais’ ability to express a sense of place that is the strongest link. Despite the incredible surge in interest, prices are shocklingly reasonable compared to its northern neighbors, whether you are looking at old school estates like Foillard and Thivin, or newcomers like Domain Blain.

Founded by the youngest generation of the iconic Burgundy Domaine Blain-Gagnard, Domaine Blain is a brother/sister project that brings the Burgundy-Beaujolais connection even closer together. Their Brouilly and Cote de Brouilly are proving to be utterly classic Beaujolais, and the ‘Pierre Bleue’ should be deeply satisfying to any fan of the region, even more so at $24.94.

Pierre Bleue is named for the blue-green granite of this tiny sub region on the Cote de Brouilly, the remnants of an ancient volcano. Beaujolais is particularly well known for its distinctive minerality, and this beautifully aromatic red truly feels like it could come from no other place. With vines up to 60 years old and use of whole clusters, this has a ton of depth and complexity for a red at this price point, but of course doesn’t skimp on Beaujolais’ well known impression of joie de vivre. Best of all, this is 30% off our regular price, and really an extraordinary value for a cru Beaujolais from this inimitable Burgundy dynasty. Cheers!

92 points, Vinous: "Highly perfumed red and blue fruit and floral pastille aromas are sharpened by white pepper and smoky mineral nuances. Juicy and energetic in the mouth, offering intense boysenberry and raspberry preserve flavors that deepen with air. Nicely concentrated and sharply focused, showing nervy finishing bite and subtle tannins that add shape and grip to a very long, red fruit-driven finish. Drink 2021-2027"
