Though we have been impressed before by Domaine Michel Magnien's refreshing approach to some of the most prized terroirs in the Cote de Nuits, their ‘Les Seurvrees’ Gevrey Chambertin really does inspire a double take. ‘Les Seuvrees’ is nominally a village Burgundy, from a single lieu-dit, but with its placement right below the grand cru Mazoyères-Chambertin, not to mention 60 year old vines, it performs at a deceptively high level for a fraction of the price. Magnien’s certified biodynamic ‘Les Seuvrees’ is just in a different class, with “stature and intensity, all of a piece” (Wine & Spirits). Gevrey Chambertin is the go-to for structured and well built red Burgundy, and Magnien’s is a must try for fans of the style.

Since convincing his family to start estate bottling in 1993, Frédéric Magnien has built a reputation for “rich, sumptuous Burgundies” (Wine Advocate), with biodynamic viticulture, and a modern aging regimen that eschews new oak, preferring neutral oak and amphorae. Magnien is “arguably the leading specialist in Burgundy in the use of amphorae” (Burghound), which he uses to achieve richness and power without overpowering oaky notes. This is absolutely a vintage to go big on, as the 2017s “have a lot of charm, will give a lot of pleasure and will surprise many with their longevity (Vinous), which happens to describe the 2017 ‘Les Seuvrees’ perfectly!

92 points, Wine & Spirits: "Seuvrées lies just below Mazoyères-Chambertin at the border between Gevrey and Morey, where Frédéric Magnien tends 60-year-old vines, his farming certified biodynamic since 2015. The site produced a muscular, grippingly tannic 2017 with floral red cherry and ripe cranberry flavors that completely fill out the structure. It has stature and intensity, all of a piece."
